How to Use the Amazon FBA Profit Calculator

The Amazon FBA profit calculator totals how much you actually keep from one unit sold. You enter six values, and the tool immediately shows the Amazon referral fee, net profit per unit, margin, and ROI. The fields are already filled with sample rates, so you see the result as soon as the page opens.

  1. In the Selling price field, enter the amount you sell the product for (default $29.99).
  2. In the Product cost field, enter the purchase or manufacturing cost per unit (default $8).
  3. In the FBA fee (fulfillment) field, enter Amazon's order fulfillment fee (default $5.50).
  4. In the Amazon referral fee % field, set the referral percentage for your category (default 15%).
  5. In the Shipping to Amazon field, enter the cost to send inventory to the warehouse per unit (default $1.20).
  6. In the Ad cost per unit field, enter the average ad cost per sale (default $3).

All rates are starting points, and you can change them. Use the same currency in every field. The default is US dollars ($), but once you enter your own values, you can calculate in any currency.

How to Calculate the Referral Fee and FBA Fee

The two most important cost items are the referral fee and the fulfillment fee. The calculator works out the first one; you enter the second one yourself.

Amazon referral fee is a percentage of the selling price. The calculator works it out like this: selling price x referral rate / 100. At $29.99 and 15%, the result is $4.50. The rate depends on the product category, so check the current Amazon fee schedule and enter the correct percentage.

FBA fee (fulfillment) is the amount charged for receiving inventory, packing it, and delivering the order to the customer. It depends on dimensions, weight, and product category, so it can be different for each product. Enter the rate you find in the current Amazon fee schedule.

For the default values, the breakdown looks like this:

ItemValue
Selling price$29.99
Product cost$8.00
FBA fee (fulfillment)$5.50
Amazon referral fee 15%$4.50
Shipping to Amazon$1.20
Ad cost per unit$3.00

How to Interpret Net Profit, Margin, and ROI

The three results describe the same profit from different angles and together give a full picture of profitability.

  • Net profit per unit is the amount left after all costs: profit = selling price - product cost - FBA fee - Amazon referral fee - shipping to Amazon - ad cost. For the default values: 29.99 - 8 - 5.50 - 4.50 - 1.20 - 3 = 7.79.
  • Margin shows what share of the selling price the profit represents: margin = profit / selling price x 100%. Here, 7.79 / 29.99 x 100% = 25.98%.
  • ROI tells you how much you earn relative to the money tied up in inventory and shipping: ROI = profit / (product cost + shipping to Amazon) x 100%. Here, 7.79 / (8 + 1.20) x 100% = 84.69%.

When you interpret the results, look at all three numbers together. Margin shows whether a single sale makes sense at your price, while ROI shows how hard the money invested in inventory is working. A low margin with a high ROI can be acceptable when a product sells quickly, but it leaves little room for returns, discounts, and cost errors.

What Additional Costs to Include in FBA

The calculator covers six items, so anything beyond that set you must add yourself - preferably by increasing the product cost or lowering the price. Keep in mind:

  • taxes, VAT, customs duties, and other public fees,
  • storage, disposal, and return fees,
  • seller account subscription and fixed fees,
  • labels, master cartons, product prep, and international shipping costs,
  • return, claim, and damaged unit costs,
  • exchange-rate differences when your costs are in a different currency than your sales,
  • individual rates and discounts from your supplier or platform.

A simple approach: estimate these costs per unit and add them to the product cost. You will then see how margin and ROI change and whether the price still covers all expenses.

Tool Limitations and What the Calculator Does Not Include

This is a per-unit calculation based only on the numbers you enter. It is not an accounting statement or a sales forecast.

By nature, the tool does not account for:

  • current platform fee schedules and rates - these change over time and depend on category, dimensions, and product weight,
  • your individual terms, negotiated rates, and promotional programs,
  • storage costs, returns, taxes, and bookkeeping,
  • exchange rate changes,
  • whether the product will actually sell and how quickly.

So treat the result as an indicative starting point for your own decisions. Before setting a price, check the current Amazon fee schedule and add the costs you incur in your situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate net profit on Amazon FBA?

Subtract the product cost, FBA fee, Amazon referral fee, shipping to the warehouse, and ad cost from the selling price. The calculator does this for you and shows the result per unit.

How much is the Amazon referral fee?

The rate depends on the product category, so there is no single value for everyone. Enter the percentage that applies to your category in the calculator - the default is 15%.

What is ACOS and how do I enter it in the calculator?

ACOS is ad spend as a share of sales value. In the calculator, you simply enter the ad amount per unit sold - the default is $3.

What is a good margin for Amazon FBA?

It depends on price, category, and return risk. The more expensive the product and the more returns, the higher the margin you need to keep the business safe.

What currency does the calculator use? Can I use another currency?

By default, it works in US dollars ($). You can enter amounts in any currency as long as all fields use the same unit.

Does the calculator include taxes and storage costs?

No. It calculates the six basic items you see on screen. Taxes, storage, returns, and fixed costs you need to estimate yourself and add to the product cost.

Rates and fees are estimates - check Amazon's current fee schedule and your own costs before deciding.
