What exactly does the Witcher Calculator do?

  • Calculates hit and DPS for steel and silverbased on the damage base, oil and sign bonuses, enemy resistances and critical stats.
  • Takes into account critical expected value- this is not a "perfect" hit, just an average value for a given chance and critical multiplier.
  • Counts the time to kill an enemy (TTK)when you enter its HP - for steel and silver swords separately, in the form of seconds + number of hits.

How are hit scores and DPS calculated?

What you see in the results panel is not just "base times something". There is a specific pattern behind each number. This way you know what exactly changes the modifier you just increased by a few percent. The simplified text version of the formula looks like this:

Hit =base× (1 + oil bonus + sign bonus) × (1 − resistance) × (1 + (crit multiplier − 1) × crit chance)

DPS =hit× APS (attacks per second)

In practice, this means that each piece of the puzzle - oil, signs, resistance, indoor and APS - acts as a separate "slider". When you spin one of them, the rest stays the same, so it's easy to see which one gives the most damage gain in your build.

Build presets - balanced, hidden and under signs

For quick tests, the calculator includesready-made presets, which set typical values for three game styles with one click:

Balanced

The "Balanced" preset is a compromise between raw punching power, a reasonable amount of crits, and moderate character support. The oil bonus here is higher than the magic bonus, and the crit chance remains at a safe level (approx. 20%). Perfect for first tests when you want to quickly see how DPS metrics perform without extreme values.

Indoor

In the Indoor preset, the entire philosophy is based onhigh critical chance and a strongmultiplier. Oil fades slightly into the background, the marks go down, and you invest in making as many blows "enter the red" as possible. The calculator will show how much the expected DPS increases and how much you lose when the crit fails - you can clearly see the difference between the version with and without crit.

Under Signs

In turn, the "Under Signs" preset makes room for a more magicalbuild: high magic bonus, delicate oils, moderate chance to be hid. With this setting, it is the signs and the buffs resulting from them that do the most work, and the calculator directly shows how their strengthening translates into the final hit and DPS of the swords.

Important:presets do not triggercalculations. They only change the input values. Calculations and saving to the history are performed only after clicking the "Calculate" button. Thanks to this, you can freely modify the preset before you actually calculate the entire set of parameters.

Inputs vs. results – what do you see on the right side of the calculator?

Entrance Panel – Everything You Can Position

  • Steel and Silver Base– here you enter the raw damage your swords deal before adding buffs. In practice, you can take your game score, average range, or numbers from your own tests.
  • Oil Bonus– a bonus towards a specific group of monsters. For relics, necrophages, draconids, etc. you can enter a typical value from your build, e.g. +20% or +30%.
  • Sign Bonus– an additional percentage that represents reinforcements resulting from investing in signs, mutations or bonuses depending on the playing style (e.g. stronger Igni, Aard, etc.).
  • Crit chance and crit multiplier- the heart of every red number build. These fields determine how much the expected value of a shot increases compared to the base numbers.
  • APS – attacks per second– it seems like a small parameter, but it makes a huge difference in DPS. In the calculator you can simply assume an average for your fighting style.
  • Enemy type and resistance- you choose who you fight: beast, necrophage, wraith, draconid, relic, human. If you leave the resistance at 0%, the calculator will use thedefault resistanceassigned to that type.
  • Enemy HP– optionally, you can add the target's health points. Then the calculator will calculate how many hits are needed on average and how many seconds it will take to kill the opponent based on your DPS.
  • Precision– number of decimal places in the results. From 0 (only whole numbers) to 6 (for those who like full detail).

Results dashboard – what metrics do you get?

When you click "Calculate", the right side of the calculator will fill with data. At the very top, you'll see the four most important numbers:

  • Strike (Steel)– expected damage of a single steel punch.
  • Strike (silver)- same for silver sword.
  • DPS (steel)- how much damage per second you deal with steel at the given APS.
  • DPS (silver)– DPS of silver under the same conditions.

Below is a DPS comparison in the form ofprogress bars: you can see which sword hits harder in percentage relative to the maximum of them. The "Difference" metric appears next to it - in absolute values ​​and percentages. This is the perfect place to answer the question: "is it really worth taking out silver on this opponent, or is steel enough?"

The next layer is the"Build Metrics" section. There, the calculator shows:

  • used resistance (default or manually entered),
  • totalbuff multiplier(oil + signs),
  • expectedcrit multiplier- the resultant of the chance and power of a critical hit,
  • the number precision currently used.

Below you will get a "steel vs silver" table in two variants:without a tierandwith a tier. You see separately:

  • single hit damage without crit and with crit,
  • DPS without crit and "if every hit was critical".

At the end, if you have entered the enemy's HP, theTTK (time to kill) section appears. For steel and silver separately, the calculator shows:

  • estimated kill time in seconds,
  • number of hits needed to reset the life bar.
TTK is, of course, a theoretical value - in real combat there are animations, dodges, pauses, missed blows and situational modifiers. But as a reference point when comparing builds, it works great.

Example scenario - test of a build against a necrophage with 5000 HP

Let's assume that you want to test whether it is more profitable for you to build a "Balanced" or an aggressive "Indoor" build, fighting a necrophage with 5000 HP. You set the enemy type toNecrophage, leave the resistance at 0% (the calculator will take the default value), enter the enemy's HP and switch between presets.

In the first step, you select the "Balanced" preset, or slightly adjust the steel and silver damage base for your equipment. You click "Calculate". On the right side you can see:

  • average hit of steel and silver,
  • their DPS with your APS,
  • DPS difference in numbers and percentages,
  • number of hits needed to remove 5000 HP,
  • time to kill necrophagus with steel and silver.

Then you switch to the "Cloaked" preset, you change only the crit chance and the multiplier, for example, leaving the enemy's HP and type as they were. You click "Calculate" again and compare how:

  • expected hits increase,
  • silver and steel DPS increases,
  • TTK - time to kill the opponent - decreases.

After two or three such runs, you have a clear idea which playing style suits you better in a given scenario: a calmer build that maintains stable DPS, or a risky critical monster that can "evaporate" the opponent's life bar, but sometimes not hit him as hard as you would like.

FAQ - Frequently asked questions about The Witcher Calculator

Are the results 1:1 with a specific game?

The calculator is based on a simple and clear mathematical model typical of action RPG games. It is intended primarily forcomparison of builds andtrends, and not for one-to-one recreation of all the nuances of a specific production: animations, hitboxes, hit errors or hidden modifiers.

Why do I need steel and silver separately if I can count "some DPS" in general?

In many combat systems, steel and silver are designed withdifferent groups ofopponents in mind. The Witcher calculator helps reflect this - you can see when steel is enough and when it is worth switching to silver, and which sword works better with your oil, sign or indoor build.

Why does the calculator count "expected value" and not ideal crit?

Expected value tells you how much damage your build will average in a longer fight. A single perfect crit looks impressive, but for comparing builds and estimating TTK, an average is better, which mixes normal and critical hits together according to the given chance.

What if the result looks suspiciously low or high?

First, look atimmunityand make sure the enemy type you set matches what you want to simulate. Remember that 0% in the resistance field means "take the default value for the given type", not a complete lack of resistance. It is also worth checking the APS and the hidden multiplier - zeros or random entries may underestimate or overestimate the result.

Can I use the calculator for games other than "The Witcher"?

Absolutely. The model is universal:base + buffs + resistance + indoor + tempo. If your favorite game works similarly, just enter its numbers - you will get a purely mathematical comparison of builds, even if the names of the statistics are different from those in the calculator.
