How to calculate the weight of the stone needed? Formula and examples

Calculation of the demand for bulk materials is based on a simple volume-mass formula:

$$\text{Weight (tons)} = A \times t \times \rho$$

Where: $A$ is the land surface ($m^2$), $t$ is the thickness of the planned layer expressed in meters (e.g. $5 \text{ cm} = 0.05 \text{ m}$), and $\rho$ is the bulk density of the aggregate ($t/m^3$).

Example: You want to cover a 10 m x 2 m garden bed (area $A = 20 \text{ m}^2$) with river stone with a density of $1.6 \text{ t/m}^3$ to a thickness of $5 \text{ cm} (0.05 \text{ m})$. The calculation is as follows:

  • Aggregate volume: $$V = 20 \text{ m}^2 \times 0.05 \text{ m} = 1 \text{ m}^3$$

How to properly arrange river stones in the garden?

To make the stone bed look aesthetically pleasing for years and be easy to maintain, follow the steps below:

  1. Ditching (Preparation of the ground):Remove the turf and remove the soil to a depth of about 5-10 cm. Level and compact the substrate.
  2. Installation of edges:Install plastic edges (eco-borders) or paving stones on the edges. This will prevent stones from spilling onto the lawn.
  3. Laying out the agrotextile:Line the bottom of the trench with a strong agrotextile or geotextile (preferably with a weight of at least 90-100 g/m²). It allows water and air to pass through, but completely blocks the growth of weeds from the ground and prevents the stone from mixing with the soil.
  4. Pouring aggregate:Spread the stone evenly using wheelbarrows and rakes. The optimal layer thickness should be approximately 1.5 to 2 times greater than the maximum size (fraction) of the stone used.

What is the optimal thickness of the stone layer?

For gravel and chippings with a fine fraction (e.g. 8-16 mm), the optimal layer thickness is 5 cm. This allows the agrotextile to be fully covered so that it is not transparent. For thicker pebbles (e.g. 32-64 mm), the layer must be at least 8-10 cm, which automatically increases the material consumption per square meter.

How to care for stones in the garden so that they do not become covered with dirt and moss?

The key is to use good quality agrotextile under the stone, which eliminates mixing with the ground. If, after many years, organic sediment accumulates on the surface (e.g. leaves, dust) and weeds begin to appear, they can be easily removed by hand or sprayed. The stones can also be refreshed with a pressure washer.

How many 25 kg bags do I need for 1 square meter?

With a standard layer thickness of 5 cm, the requirement is approximately 75-80 kg of aggregate per 1 m². This means that you will need approximately 3 bags of stone weighing 25 kg each to cover one square meter of surface.

What is the difference between gravel and grit?

Gravel (including cobble) is a stone with rounded, smooth edges, formed naturally by washing by water in rivers or mines. Grit is a stone broken mechanically in crushers and having sharp edges. Grit sticks better on driveways and paths (it moves less), while river gravel is more pleasant to walk on barefoot.

Can I pour stones directly onto the ground without foil/non-woven fabric?

This is not recommended. Without the agrotextile, the stones will quickly mix with the soil due to trampling and rainfall (they will sink into the ground), and weeds and grass will begin to grow en masse between the cracks, which will ruin the aesthetic effect in a few months.
