How to convert gross to net pension?

ZUS deducts two items from the gross pension:health insurance contribution 9%andPIT advance 12%reduced by 1/12 of the tax reducing amount (PLN 300 per month), which ZUS applies ex officio. The pensioner does not pay social contributions. Thanks to the amount that reduces pensions to approximately PLN 2,500 gross, they are practically tax-free - only the health insurance contribution is deducted.

Example

Pension PLN 3,500 gross: health insurance 9% = PLN 315; PIT advance = 12% × 3,500 − 300 = PLN 120; net =PLN 3,065.

The thirteenth and fourteenth pension

The "thirteenth" pension (paid in April) is taxed and subject to contributions in the same way as a regular pension - a health benefit and any advance payment are deducted from the gross amount equal to the minimum pension. The "Fourteenth" allowance is payable in full up to a certain threshold, above which the "PLN for PLN" principle applies.

What is deducted from the gross pension

The pension from ZUS is subject to two deductions:health contribution 9%(entirely from the pensioner's pocket) andPIT advance 12%- including the tax-free amount of PLN 30,000 per year. Practical effect of the allowance: pensions up to approx.PLN 2,500 gross per month, they do not paytax (only health tax), and the relief increases thanks to the amount reducing PLN 300/month. Example: pension PLN 3,000 gross → health insurance PLN 270, PIT 12% × 3,000 − 300 = PLN 60 →in hand approx. PLN 2,670.

Indexation, thirteenth and fourteenth pension

Benefits are provided annuallyindexed on March 1(index = inflation in pensioner households + min. 20% of real wage growth). Additionally, thethirteenth pension(April, in the amount of the minimum pension, for everyone) andfourteenthpension (September, full up to a certain threshold, hereinafter referred to as the "PLN for PLN" principle) are paid. Both are subject to normal deductions - the calculator will also calculate them on hand. Are you planning additional saving? CheckIKE/IKZE calculator i treasury bonds.

Pension supplements that increase the amount on hand

The basic pension itself is not everything - the benefit may include supplements that ZUS pays together with it or upon request. The most common:

  • Care allowance- for people over 75 years of age (awarded ex officio) or recognized as completely incapable of work and independent living.
  • Supplementary benefit 500+ for dependents- for people unable to live independently, up to a specific income threshold.
  • Allowance for village heads, veterans, for secret teaching- for authorized groups.
  • Survivor pension- after the deceased spouse, you can receive the more favorable of the two benefits (they do not add up).

Some of the allowances (e.g. care) are exempt from tax and do not form part of the tax base, so they actually increase the net amount more than the gross amount alone would suggest. It is worth checking your eligibility at ZUS - many allowances are not granted automatically and require an application.

What determines the amount of the ZUS pension

In the defined contribution system, the pension is simplythe sum of indexed capital (recorded contributions + initial capital) divided by the average life expectancyin months (GUS tables, common for women and men). There are three practical conclusions. Firstly, the longer you work, the smaller the divisor (shorter the expected life in retirement) and the larger the amount; each year of work after reaching retirement age can significantly increase the benefit. Secondly, every contribution counts, so illegal work and non-contributory contracts reduce your future pension. Thirdly, the low pension is sometimes supplemented to theminimum pensionprovided that the required length of service is demonstrated (women and men - shorter/longer contribution period, respectively). Therefore, additional saving makes sense - compareIKE and IKZEandtreasury bonds.

FAQ - frequently asked questions

Why is there no tax on my pension?
For a pension of up to approximately PLN 2,500 gross, the PIT advance (12%) is fully covered by the reducing amount (PLN 300/month), so only the 9% health insurance contribution is deducted.
Does the pensioner pay health insurance contributions?
Yes - 9% of gross pension. The health insurance contribution is deducted from every pension, regardless of its amount.
Does supplementing your pension make a net difference?
After reaching the standard retirement age, you can earn extra money without limits. Early retirees must meet the thresholds of 70% and 130% of average earnings - exceeding the threshold reduces or suspends the benefit.
