How to use the calculator

The calculator answers one question: what is the estimated Envío shipping cost for a package of a given weight, based on your assumptions for the per-kilogram rate and the base fee. You only need three numbers.

1. Weight (kg) — enter the package weight; the default is 3. You can enter a decimal value.
2. Rate / kg — the cost of each kilogram above the first. The default is 38.
3. Base fee — a fixed shipping amount that includes the first kilogram. The default is 55.

After you enter the values, you get one line item: Envío. The amount is calculated by adding the base fee to the product of the per-kilogram rate and the number of kilograms above the first, including fractional kilograms. The first kilogram is already included in the base fee, so you do not add it again.

Example with the default values: weight 3 kg, rate 38 per kilogram, base fee 55. There are 2 kg above the first kilogram, so 2 × 38 = 76. Add the base fee: 55 + 76 = 131.00 MXN. If the package weighs 1 kg or less, the result is just the base fee.

You can change the rates in the fields to your own. Then you are calculating in exactly the currency you enter.

How to choose the base fee and per-kilogram rate

The default values, 55 as the base fee and 38 for each kilogram above the first, are only a starting point, included so you can immediately see how the calculation works. Your real rates depend on your carrier contract, sales volume, and chosen service. Before you calculate the cost for a specific product, check the current Mercado Libre rate card or the terms of your shipping contract, because the rates in the tool are estimates and editable.

How to approach both fields:

• Base fee — treat it as the fixed part of the shipment, meaning everything you pay regardless of small changes in package weight. In the tool, this amount includes the first kilogram.
• Rate per kilogram — this is the cost of each additional kilogram. If you do not know the exact rate, take a few invoices or billing lines and calculate the average extra amount you pay for additional kilograms.

Practical tip: for products with similar weights, one pair of rates is enough. If you sell light items up to 1 kg, the base fee matters most, because the per-kilogram rate will not change the result.

Do not mix currencies in the two fields. Enter both amounts in the same currency, and the result will be shown in that same currency.

How to interpret the Envío result

The result is an estimated shipping cost calculated according to your assumptions. Treat it as a reference point when setting your product price and free-shipping threshold, not as the final amount on your carrier invoice.

With the default rates, a base fee of 55 and a rate of 38 for each kilogram above the first, it looks like this:

The table shows the most important thing: the cost rises with each kilogram, but it never falls below the base fee. Even a very light package therefore costs as much as the base fee.

Compare the result with the price at which you sell. If you plan to add a margin to shipping, remember that the amount shown is only the shipping cost. Packaging, fees, and taxes are not included.

What affects the real Mercado Libre shipping cost

The calculator simplifies reality to weight and two rates. In practice, many more factors affect shipping cost, so treat the result as an estimate.

• Dimensions and dimensional weight — a large, light package may be billed differently by the carrier than its actual weight alone would suggest.
• Delivery zone — shipments within a city may cost differently from remote or hard-to-reach regions.
• Service type and carrier — standard, express, courier pickup, or drop-off at a point are different amounts.
• Contract and volume — individual commercial terms change rates, and higher sales volume makes negotiation easier.
• Declared value and insurance — more expensive shipments may require extra protection.
• Free shipping and promotions — the cost is sometimes partly passed on to you or co-funded through platform campaigns.
• Fees, taxes, and exchange rates — if you settle in another currency, an exchange-rate difference applies.

It is therefore worth calculating the cost with the tool and then comparing it with the current rate card in your seller account and the amounts on recent invoices.

Calculator limitations and what it does not calculate

The tool does exactly one thing: it puts your three numbers into a simple formula and returns one Envío line item. It is not a full profitability calculator and does not replace the platform rate card or a carrier quote.

What it does not include:

• package dimensions and dimensional weight,
• delivery zones and distance,
• free shipping, promotions, and platform subsidies,
• sales fees, payment fees, taxes, and customs duties,
• insurance, declared value, and packaging cost,
• discounts from your carrier contract,
• current rate cards and exchange rates.

There are also no fixed thresholds beyond the first kilogram included in the base fee. Everything else depends on the values you enter. The calculations run in your browser, and nothing is sent to a server.

Bottom line: use the result as a quick estimate when planning prices, but confirm the final amount in the current platform rate card or with your carrier.
