What is light illumination
Light illumination, also called illuminance, describes the amount of light falling on a given surface. The light source can be both natural light from windows and artificial lighting from lamps, LED fixtures, light bulbs or reflectors. In practice, we simply talk about how bright it is on the desk, floor, workstation or road.
Formally, the illuminance E is given by the formula:
E = Φ / S
where:
E - illumination intensity
Φ - luminous flux [lumens, lm]
S - illuminated area [square meters, m²]
So if you know the luminous flux of the fixture and the size of the illuminated area, you can calculate the average illuminance in lux. The illuminance calculator performs this calculation automatically and helps you interpret the result.
Illumination units - lux and foot candile
In the SI system, the unit of illuminance is lux (lx). One lux is the illuminance produced when a luminous flux of 1 lumen uniformly illuminates an area of 1 m².
In the foot system, the foot candle unit is used. One foot candyla corresponds to the illuminance over an area of 1 square foot illuminated by a luminous flux of 1 lumen. The relationship between these units is as follows:
1 foot candle ≈ 10.76 lux 1 lux ≈ 0.0929 foot candle

How the Illuminance Calculator works
The Illuminance Calculator can operate in two main modes:
- calculating illuminance from the equation E = Φ / S,
- converting illuminance units between lux and foot candy.
Mode 1 - calculating E from the equation E = Φ / S

Enter the value of the luminous flux in lumens, for example the total value for several lighting fixtures in one room. - Enter the area S
Enter the size of the illuminated area in square meters, for example the area of an office, warehouse, work table or part of a corridor. - Read the result in lux
The illuminance calculator will calculate the E value in lux and can additionally indicate whether it is within the typical range for a given type of room (e.g. office, corridor, warehouse).
Mode 2 - conversion of lux to foot candy and vice versa
