What is electric current? A quick reminder
Electric currentis the ordered movement of electric charges (usually electrons) in a conductor. In practice, this means the "speed" at which charge flows through the cross-section of the conductor per unit of time. The basic unit of current in the SI system isampere (A).
In many applications - especially in electronics - we use smaller or larger units:
- milliampere (mA)- 1 mA = 0.001 A, i.e. one thousandth of an ampere,
- kiloampere (kA)– 1 kA = 1000 A, or one thousand amperes.
In practice, small currents in electronic circuits are given inmA, typical currents in home installations - inA, and very large short-circuit currents or in industrial systems - inkA. That's why the convenientcurrent converteris so often useful.
