The history of the metronome – from the mechanical pendulum to digital precision
The history of attempts at mechanical tempo measurement dates back to Galileo's research on the movement of the pendulum. The first advanced attempts to create a device for musicians were made at the end of the 17th century by the French physicist and music theorist Étienne Loulié, but his pioneering "chronometer" was too high (it measured nearly 2 meters) and did not generate sound. The breakthrough came at the beginning of the 19th century. Dutch inventor Dietrich Nikolaus Winkel constructed a compact pendulum powered by a clock mechanism that could click loudly. This idea was unscrupulously appropriated and patented in 1816 by the German designer Johann Nepomuk Mälzel. It was Mälzel who founded the first metronome factory, and his name gave rise to the common tempo marking "M.M." (Mälzel's Metronome). One of the first great composers to enthusiastically adopt this invention and start adding precise numerical values to his works was Ludwig van Beethoven.
In the 20th century, traditional mechanical metronomes with a pendulum and a sliding weight began to be replaced by electronic metronomes, and nowadays by Internet and mobile applications. A mechanical metronome uses a physical pendulum and spring. It has its charm and provides a strong visual stimulus, but it can become uncalibrated by moisture, temperature or poor surface level.
