Where did the mile as a unit of measurement come from?
The mile comes from ancient Rome (Latinmille passus– thousand steps). The Roman step (passus) consisted of two single steps and was approximately 1.48 meters. Thus, a Roman mile was approximately 1,480 meters long. The modern (English) land mile was set in 1593 by the British Parliament at 5,280 feet (1,609.34 m).
How to easily quickly convert km to miles in memory?
To quickly estimate distance in miles, multiply kilometers by 0.6 (e.g. 10 km × 0.6 = 6 miles). The exact result is 6.21 miles, which is a good enough approximation for driving or running.
Why is a nautical mile different from a land mile?
