A hectare (symbol: ha) is a commonly used unit of land and real estate area, constituting part of a non-system measurement system, but allowed for use with SI units. One hectare corresponds to the area of a square with sides of 100 meters. The square meter (symbol: m²) is the basic unit of area in the SI system. Knowing the conversion rate from hectares to square meters is crucial in geodesy, agriculture, forestry and in the trading of agricultural and construction real estate. The name "hectare" is a combination of the Greek wordhekaton(meaning one hundred) and the French unit of area - ara.
Our free live area converter allows you to instantly convert hectares to square meters, ares and square kilometers. The tool is an invaluable aid when analyzing land and mortgage registers, spatial development plans or estimating agricultural subsidies.
Formula for converting hectares (ha) to square meters (m²)
The relationship between hectare and square meter is based on a simple multiplier resulting from the geometry of a square with sides of 100 m × 100 m:
1 ha = 10,000 m²
To convert the area expressed in hectares (Pha) into square meters (Pm²), multiply the number of hectares by 10,000:
Pm²= Pha× 10,000
If it is necessary to convert square meters into hectares, divide by 10,000:
Pha= Pm²/ 10,000
It is also worth remembering the relation to ares: 1 A hectare is exactly 100 ares (1 are = 100 m²).
Area conversion table: hectares (ha) to square meters (m²) and ares (a)
The table below shows the most popular land areas and their conversion into m² and ares:
| Area in hectares (ha) | Area in ares (a) | Area in square meters (m²) | Practical example in reality |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.01 ha | 1 a | 100 m² | A small recreational plot or the area of a small house. |
| 0.1 ha | 10 a | 1000 m² | Classic plot size for building a single-family house. |
| 0.5 ha | 50 a | 5000 m² | A small garden farm or a city park. |
| 0.7 ha | 70 a | 7000 m² | Approximate area of a full-size football pitch. |
| 1 ha | 100 a | 10,000 m² | Medium-sized farm or large factory. |
| 4 ha | 400 a | 40,000 m² | Area of the Main Market Square in Krakow (square 200 m × 200 m). |
| 10 ha | 1000 a | 100,000 m² | Very large housing estate or medium-sized forest. |
| 100 ha (1 km²) | 10,000 and | 1,000,000 m² | Medium-sized village or national park. |
The use of area measurements in agriculture and real estate
Converting geodetic units of ha and m² is of key importance in many industries:
- Agriculture and direct subsidies:The Agency for Restructuring and Modernization of Agriculture (ARiMR) accepts applications for subsidies only in hectares (accurate to two decimal places).
- Real estate market:Prices of building plots are most often given per square meter (e.g. PLN 150/m²) or per are (e.g. PLN 15,000/are). In the case of large investment or agricultural plots, the price is given per physical or conversion hectare.
- Forestry and forest management plans:Forest resources, fellings and plantings are planned globally in hectares.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
How many square meters (m²) is exactly one hectare?
One hectare (1 ha) has exactly 10,000 square meters of area.
What is an are and how does it relate to a hectare?
Ar (symbol: a) is a unit of area equal to 100 square meters (10 m square). There are exactly 100 ares in one hectare.
How many hectares are in one square kilometer (km²)?
There are exactly 100 hectares in one square kilometer.
What is a conversion hectare?
This is a concept used in Polish tax and agricultural law to determine the assessment of agricultural tax and farm profitability. It is calculated on the basis of physical hectares multiplied by the class and tax district coefficient of the land.
How to quickly convert m² to hectares in your mind?
To convert square meters to hectares, move the decimal point to the left by 4 places (e.g. 25,000 m² equals 2.5 ha).
