Other tools you may find usefulHow does our online camera test work?
In the era of remote work, online education and regular video conferences with friends, a functional webcam is an absolute necessity. Our free online camera test allows you to instantly check the device's efficiency directly in your web browser. The tool uses modern WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) technology, specifically an API programming interface calledgetUserMedia. This allows the browser to safely access the video stream from your camera without having to install any plug-ins, programs or external drivers.
Most importantly, we care about your privacy. The entire testing process takes place locally in your browser - the image from the camera does not leave your computer, is not saved anywhere, sent to servers or made available to third parties. Once the test is completed and the browser tab is closed, access to the device is immediately and irreversibly closed.
The most common webcam problems and their solutions
If the camera image does not appear on the screen during the test, the most common cause is not a hardware failure, but minor system or browser configuration errors. Here is a list of steps that will help you solve the most common problems:
- No permissions in the browser:When you run the test for the first time, the browser asks for permission to access the camera. If you clicked "Block", the camera will not work. To fix this, click the lock icon to the left of the URL in your browser and change the camera's permission status to "Allow."
- Camera used by another application:A webcam can usually only support one program at a time. Make sure there are no applications such as Skype, Microsoft Teams, Zoom or Discord running in the background that may block access to your device.
- Physical cover or switch:Many modern laptops have a mechanical lens cover or a dedicated function key on the keyboard (often with a camera icon) that completely turns off power to the camera. Make sure the lens is uncovered and the device is turned on.
- Problems with drivers:In Windows, go to Device Manager, find the "Cameras" or "Imaging Devices" section, right-click on your camera and select "Update driver" or "Uninstall device" (after restarting the computer, the system will reinstall the driver).
Comparison of the most popular camera resolutions
Image resolution determines how clearly other meeting participants can see you. The table below shows the characteristics of the standards:
| Standard name | Resolution (pixels) | Aspect ratio | Main use | Internet connection required |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SD (Standard Definition) | 640 x 480 (VGA) | 4:3 | Older laptops, very poor internet connections. | Min. 0.5 Mbps (upload) |
| HD (High Definition) | 1280 x 720 (720p) | 16:9 | Standard video calls for work, online lessons. | Min. 1.5 Mbps (upload) |
| Full HD | 1920 x 1080 (1080p) | 16:9 | High-quality video conferencing, streaming, video recording. | Min. 3.0 Mbps (upload) |
| 4K Ultra HD | 3840 x 2160 (2160p) | 16:9 | Professional video production, advanced live streaming. | Min. 15 Mbps (upload) |
Guide to optimal lighting during video meetings
Even the best Full HD camera will not produce a nice image without proper lighting. Here's a simple guide to getting a professional look in front of the camera:
- Light from the front, never from the back:The most important rule. Never sit with your back to a window or strong light source. This will make your face completely dark (silhouette effect) and the background will be overexposed. The light should fall directly on your face.
- Take advantage of natural light:If possible, place your desk facing a window. Daylight is the most natural and best reflects skin colors.
- Soften artificial light:If you use a desk lamp, do not direct its sharp beam directly into your face. Point it at the wall in front of you - the reflected light will be soft, natural and will not cause deep dark circles under the eyes.
- Position the camera at eye level:Avoid framing from the bottom (shows the ceiling and distorts the face). Place your laptop on a stand or books so that the camera lens is exactly at your eye level.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Does the camera test on this website require a login?
No. Our webcam test is 100% free, it does not require creating an account, providing personal data or logging in. It works immediately after entering the website and agreeing to access the camera.
Why is my camera image lagging or stuttering?
Image delay may result from too much load on the computer's processor (close unnecessary tabs and programs in the background) or from too poor lighting - in the dark, cameras automatically extend the frame exposure time, which results in a drop in image smoothness (FPS).
Can I choose which camera I want to test?
Yes. If several devices are connected to your computer (e.g. a built-in camera in a laptop and an external USB camera), our tool allows you to easily select the active video source from a drop-down list.
What is camera FPS and how much should it be?
FPS (Frames Per Second) is the number of frames per second. The higher the value, the smoother the movement. For standard video calls, 30 FPS is sufficient. Gamers and streamers often use cameras that support 60 FPS, which gives cinematic smooth motion.
How to clean the camera lens without scratching the glass?
Always use a soft microfiber cloth (e.g. one used for cleaning glasses). Avoid rough paper towels and aggressive chemicals - if necessary, moisten the cloth with a drop of water or a special liquid for LCD screens.
