Other tools you may find usefulHow to Use the FBA vs FBM Calculator
The calculator compares the fulfillment cost of one order under two Amazon selling models: FBA, where the platform handles shipping, and FBM, where you pack and ship the order yourself. Enter a few numbers and you immediately see which option is cheaper under your assumptions.
- Enter the product sale price. The default is $30.
- Add the FBA fee, the platform-side fulfillment cost. The default is $5.50.
- Add the storage cost assigned to one order. The default is $0.80.
- Enter the shipping cost in the FBM model. The default is $6.50.
- Enter how many work hours one order takes and your hourly rate. The default is 0.2 hours and $15 per hour.
The result recalculates as soon as you change any value. Enter amounts in the platform currency, which is US dollars by default. If you prefer to use another currency, enter your own rates in that currency and stay consistent, because the tool does not convert currencies.
It is worth checking a few scenarios side by side: one for a lighter product, one for a heavier product, and one for orders shipped in batches. Comparing several variants gives a better picture than looking at a single result.
How to Read the FBA Cost and FBM Cost Result
After you enter your data, you will see two numbers: FBA cost and FBM cost. Each describes the full fulfillment cost of one order under that model, including the Amazon referral fee.
| Element | How it is calculated | Default value |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon referral fee | 15% of the sale price | $4.50 |
| FBA cost | FBA fee + storage + referral fee | $10.80 |
| FBM cost | shipping + work hours x hourly rate + referral fee | $14.00 |
For the default values, it looks like this:
- Amazon referral fee = $30 x 0.15 = $4.50,
- FBA cost = $5.50 + $0.80 + $4.50 = $10.80,
- FBM cost = $6.50 + 0.2 x $15 + $4.50 = $6.50 + $3.00 + $4.50 = $14.00.
Next to the results, the Cheaper via conclusion appears, showing the cheaper model and the difference amount. If FBA cost is less than or equal to FBM cost, you will see FBA and the difference calculated as FBM cost minus FBA cost. Otherwise, you will see FBM and the difference calculated as FBA cost minus FBM cost. With the default data, the result is: cheaper via FBA, difference $3.20. That is the savings per order.
Treat this difference as a cost comparison, not a profit promise. The tool does not calculate profit, margin, revenue, or taxes, so it only presents the costs you entered.
What FBA Costs to Enter for a Reliable Result
The reliability of the comparison depends mainly on how accurately you reflect your costs. Three fields relate to the FBA model.
- FBA fee - the cost of order fulfillment by the platform. Enter the rate for your product size and weight, not an average for your whole store.
- Storage - the portion of storage fees assigned to one sold order. For slow-moving inventory, this value will be higher than for a product that sells out in a few days.
- Sale price - do not enter a promotional price if most of your orders sell at the regular price. The referral fee is calculated as 15% of this amount, so a lower price also lowers the referral fee.
Check the current fee schedule and terms in Seller Central before treating the result as binding. The rates in the tool are estimates, and you can overwrite them with your own. Two people selling the same product can have different FBA fees because they depend on dimensions, weight, packaging, and season.
A good practice is to calculate an optimistic and a pessimistic variant: one with a lower FBA fee and one with a higher FBA fee. If the same model wins in both cases, the decision is easier to make.
FBM Costs: Shipping, Labor, and Packing
In the FBM model, you pack and ship orders yourself. The calculator accounts for two elements: shipping cost and the value of the time you spend on it.
- FBM shipping - the amount you pay the carrier to send one package. Enter the real rate, including any insurance.
- Work hours - how many hours it takes you to handle one order. Enter part of an hour as a fraction; for example, 0.2 means about twelve minutes.
- Hourly rate - how you value your work hour. It does not have to be an amount you pay someone; it can be the value of your time.
FBM cost comes from a simple calculation: shipping + work hours x hourly rate + Amazon referral fee. Packing materials such as boxes, fillers, tape, and labels are not a separate field. Want to include them? Add them to the shipping cost or the hourly rate, and the comparison stays fair.
With the default values, labor is 0.2 x $15 = $3.00. If packing takes more time in your situation or you value it higher, FBM becomes even more expensive. It is worth checking at what value both models break even, because that information can be more valuable than the result itself.
Limitations and What the Tool Does Not Calculate
The calculator is for an initial comparison of fulfillment costs, not a full product profitability analysis. It helps to know what it does not include.
- It does not calculate profit, margin, or revenue. It compares only the costs entered in the fields and indicates the cheaper model.
- It does not include taxes or other fees. Sales tax, VAT, duties, import fees, and similar charges must be added separately.
- It does not pull current fee schedules. FBA fees, storage rates, and shipping prices are estimates. Check current values in Seller Central and with your carrier.
- It does not convert currencies. Enter amounts in one chosen currency, US dollars by default.
- It does not know your individual terms. Negotiated carrier discounts, returns, damages, advertising costs, and extra fees remain outside the comparison.
- It does not include product cost. The price at which you buy the product is not a separate field, so the result does not say whether selling is profitable.
The result is especially approximate when your costs change from month to month, when you sell products of very different weights and sizes, or when shipping prices depend on the delivery zone. In those cases, calculate several typical orders separately and draw conclusions from that.
Also remember that the comparison is only about money. It does not measure the time you save with FBA or the flexibility FBM gives you. The decision about a fulfillment model is often broader than one dollar difference.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check whether FBA or FBM is cheaper?
Enter the sale price, FBA fee, storage cost, FBM shipping cost, work hours, and hourly rate. The calculator will calculate FBA cost and FBM cost and show which model is cheaper and by how much.
Does the calculator include VAT and taxes?
No. The tool compares only the fulfillment costs entered in the fields and does not add taxes or other charges. You must account for sales tax, VAT, duties, and similar costs yourself.
What hourly rate should I enter in the calculator?
Enter an amount that realistically reflects the value of your work hour for packing and shipping. Time is entered in hours, so 0.2 means about twelve minutes per order.
Can I use a currency other than dollars?
Yes. Enter all rates in your chosen currency, and the result will be shown in the same currency. The tool does not convert exchange rates, so use one currency throughout the comparison.
Will the calculator calculate sales profit and margin?
No. The tool does not calculate profit, margin, revenue, or taxes; it only compares order fulfillment costs under both models. Product purchase price and other expenses must be considered outside the calculator.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. Calculations run locally in your browser, and the tool does not send the values you enter to any server or save them in files.
