Other tools you may find usefulHow to Use the Calculator
The calculator runs entirely in your browser, and the amounts you enter are not sent to any server. Just provide three values and read the result - no account and no waiting.
- Gross price - default $24.00. This is the price for the item, with VAT already included.
- VAT % - default 20. Enter the rate you want to check.
- Delivery - default $5.00. The shipping cost you add to the order.
After entering the values, you will read three results: net amount, VAT amount, and total with delivery. You can change each of these values, so the same calculator works for different orders and different rates. If you sell on Amazon, Etsy, eBay, Shopify, Vinted, or TikTok, just enter the amount from your price list and see what remains.
How to Calculate VAT From the Gross Price
The gross price includes VAT, so you do not multiply it by the rate. First you extract the net value, and only then do you calculate the tax itself.
- Write the VAT rate as a decimal - 20% is 0.20. If you enter another rate, convert it the same way.
- Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate: net = gross / (1 + VAT rate).
- Subtract net from gross: VAT = gross - net.
Example with the default values: gross $24.00, VAT 20%. Divide $24.00 by 1.20 to get $20.00 net. Then subtract $24.00 - $20.00 to get $4.00 VAT. The sum $20.00 + $4.00 returns to $24.00, the starting price.
Watch out for a common error: multiplying the gross price by the VAT rate overstates the tax. For a $24.00 gross price, multiplying by 20% would not give the correct $4.00 VAT amount. Dividing by 1.20 is the correct path because it separates the net amount from the tax first.
What the Net Amount and VAT Amount Mean
Net amount is the part of the price that remains after subtracting VAT. In other words, it is the value of the item itself before tax.
VAT amount is the tax included in the gross price. It is not an additional fee added to the price - it is part of the amount the buyer pays anyway.
For a seller, this distinction matters in practice. Net amount shows the value attributed to the item sold, and VAT is the amount that usually needs to be remitted. Net amount is also often the starting point for calculating margin, discounts, and comparing offers across platforms. With the default settings, the calculator shows $20.00 net and $4.00 VAT for a gross price of $24.00.
The VAT rate depends on the country, type of goods, and your situation, so in the calculator it is a value you enter yourself. You can replace the default 20% with any rate you use. Check current rates and rules in official guidance or with your accountant before entering them into the calculation.
How to Add Delivery Cost to the Price
Treat delivery as an amount added to the gross price of the item. The calculator does not include it in the VAT base - it simply adds the shipping cost to the gross amount you already have.
The formula is short: total with delivery = gross price + delivery cost. With the default values, it looks like this: $24.00 + $5.00 = $29.00. That is what the buyer pays if they order the item with that shipping.
You enter the delivery cost yourself. It can be a rate from your shipping price list, an amount you want to show the buyer in the order summary, or a working number you start the calculation with. You can change the default $5.00 with one entry and immediately see the new total with delivery.
Remember that tax is calculated only on the item price, not on delivery. So if you want to show the buyer the full amount due, use the total with delivery. How shipping is accounted for depends on the platform and your situation - check the current pricing that applies to you for details.
Limitations and What the Tool Does Not Calculate
This is a simple three-amount calculator, so it has clear limits. It does not include commissions or fees charged by a sales platform, payment fees, packaging costs, returns, or other costs of selling.
- It does not include current platform price lists, rates, or limits - check those at the source.
- It does not convert currencies. You enter amounts in US dollars.
- It does not calculate tax on delivery - it only adds delivery to the gross price.
- It does not include your individual conditions: contracts, reliefs, exemptions, or rates used in your business.
- It does not calculate margin, profit, discounts, or the cost of buying goods.
So treat the result as a reference point, not as a final accounting. Check your platform's current pricing and the rules that apply to you, then enter the amounts into the calculator. That way you get numbers that match your real situation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate VAT from a gross price?
Divide the gross price by 1 plus the VAT rate as a decimal - that gives you the net amount. Then subtract net from gross and you have the VAT amount. For $24.00 gross and 20%, you get $20.00 net and $4.00 VAT.
Does the calculator calculate VAT on delivery?
No. VAT is calculated only on the gross price of the item, and the delivery cost is added to that price. Therefore, the total with delivery is the gross price plus delivery.
Can I change the default VAT rate and delivery cost?
Yes. The gross price, VAT rate, and delivery cost are values you enter yourself. The defaults are $24.00, 20%, and $5.00, but you can replace them with any amounts.
Does the calculator send my data to a server?
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser, and the amounts you enter are not sent anywhere. So you can check numbers you do not want to show others.
What does the total with delivery show?
It is the amount the buyer pays: the gross price of the item plus the delivery cost. With the default values $24.00 and $5.00, that is $29.00.
Does the calculator include marketplace commissions?
No. The tool calculates only the net amount, VAT amount, and total with delivery. Add commissions, payment fees, and other costs separately, preferably based on the marketplace's current pricing.
