Splitting the bill in a restaurant with a group of friends can be troublesome, especially when everyone ordered different items or when we want to add a tip. The calculator automatically divides the bill into equal or unequal parts, calculates the tip and sums up the amount per person.
Equal and unequal split
Equal split: bill / number of people. With tip: (bill × (1 + tip%)) / persons. Example: PLN 240, 4 people, 10% tip: 240 × 1.1 / 4 = PLN 66/person. Unequal: each person gives their positions → the calculator calculates the proportions. Tip only: tip/person. Convert to currency: amount in PLN → USD (rate).
Tipping in Poland and around the world
Poland: optional tip, usually 10-15% or rounded up. Served restaurants: 10-15%. Bar: Minor or none. USA: culturally mandatory 15-20%, 18-22% in cities. UK: 10-12.5% (often included). Germany: rounded to whole. Japan: no tipping (offensive). How to calculate: sum × 0.15 = 15% tip.

How to avoid problems when splitting the bill

When is a tip included in the bill?
Search: "Service charge", "service", "SVC". In the UK, automatic service charge is often 12.5%. In France: "Service compris" = included. Check your bill: if you see an extra line for service, you don't have to pay more. Optional service charge: you can request removal if service was poor. USA: gratuity automatic for groups of 6+ people.
How does "everyone pays the same" work in a group?
Method 1: Total of all bills / number of people = amount per person. Method 2: Everyone pays and settles later. Justice: the person ordering water pays the same as the person ordering the wine? Compromise: alcohol separately, food equally. Who should pay more: the one who ordered expensive dishes and alcohol.
How does Splitwise manage debts between friends?
Splitwise: enter the expense, indicate who paid and who participated. Calculates optimally (e.g. Adam owes Bartek 50, Bartek owes Celina 30 → Adam pays Celina 30, Bartek 20). Does the label require equal division?
There are no rules. Common etiquette: equal sharing in a group of friends. For someone with a much lower income: gently suggest "let's divide it differently." Birthday: The birthday boy or girl usually doesn't pay. Date: who invites, pays (or half and half - decide). Business: the person inviting (the company) usually pays. Don't count pennies on small things - it destroys relationships.
