Sudoku is a logical puzzle popular all over the world, which consists in filling a 9x9 grid with the digits from 1 to 9. Although the name "Sudoku" is a Japanese abbreviation of the phrase meaning "the digits must be single" (introduced in the 1980s by the Nikoli company), the game in its modern form was created in the United States under the nameNumber Place. However, the mathematical roots of the puzzle date back to the 18th century and the so-called Latin squares, which were studied by the famous Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler. Sudoku does not require any mathematical operations (addition or multiplication) - it is based only on pure logic, deduction and the method of elimination.

Rules of the Sudoku game
The classic Sudoku board consists of 81 squares divided into 9 rows, 9 columns and 9 smaller squares (so-called blocks) with dimensions of 3x3. At the beginning of the game, some of the fields are already filled with numbers. The player's task is to complete the remaining fields according to three simple rules:
- Each line must contain numbers from 1 to 9 without repetitions.
- Each column must contain the digits 1 through 9 without repetitions.
- Each of the nine smaller 3x3 blocks must contain the numbers 1 to 9 without repetitions.

It was mathematically proven in 2012 that the minimum number of given digits for which Sudoku has exactly one unique solution is 17. With 16 clues, it is impossible to create a clear-cut task.
What do the small numbers in the corners of the squares mean during the game?
This is the so-calledpencil marks). They are used to enter potential digits that may match a given field. They make it easier to eliminate incorrect possibilities on more difficult levels.
Do you need math skills to play Sudoku?
No. Although the board uses numbers, the game is based on logic. The numbers could be replaced by letters of the alphabet, colors or geometric shapes, and the rules of the game would remain the same.
How to start solving difficult Sudoku?
Start by analyzing the rows, columns and blocks that contain the most numbers. Then use the technique of elimination - see what numbers can fit into the blanks based on the numbers already in the adjacent lines.
