PPM - what does it mean and how to understand it?

PPM – what is it and how to convert?

PPM (parts per million) is a way of writing very small concentrations: 1 ppm means one part of a substance per million parts of the whole. This is more convenient than percentages when talking about trace amounts - instead of writing 0.0004%, we simply write 4 ppm. You will encounter the ppm unit when testing water (hardness, chlorine), in aquariums, in air quality measurements (CO₂, dust) and in laboratory chemistry.

The most important conversion formulas:1 ppm = 0.0001%, i.e.1% = 10,000 ppm. How to convert in practice? From percentage to ppm: multiply the value by 10,000 (0.05% → 500 ppm). From ppm to percentage: divide by 10,000 (250 ppm → 0.025%). FAQ - frequently asked questions

Does 1 PPM always equal 1 mg/L?

For water and solutions with a density close to 1 kg/L, this is a very good approximation, which is why it is so popular. However, if you work with liquids of different density (or with mixtures with a high content of substances), the mg/L ↔ PPM ratio may require correction. Then it is worth calculating PPM more "definitely" or taking into account density.

How to convert PPM to percentage (and vice versa)?

It's simple:1% = 10,000 PPM. That is, you divide PPM into percentage by 10,000, and the percentage into PPM you multiply by 10,000. Example: 250 PPM is 0.025%, and 0.2% is 2000 PPM. The calculator does this automatically, so you don't have to remember the formulas.

PPB and PPM - what's the difference?

The difference is of the order of1000 times: 1000 PPB = 1 PPM. PPB is used when the values ​​are very small and the entry in the PPM would be "too small". If you suspect something is wrong with the result, check for unit confusion - this is the most common error.

How does C1V1=C2V2 dilution work in practice?

The formula says that the "amount of substance" before and after dilution is the same: concentration times volume. With C1 (concentrate), C2 (target) and V2 (final volume), you calculate V1, i.e. how much concentrate you need. The rest up to V2 is solvent. You enter these three values ​​in the calculator and you immediately get a ready-made mixing recipe.

Why doesn't the calculator allow C2 to be greater than C1?

Because that wouldn't be dilution. If you want to obtain a higher concentration than in the base solution, you must either use a stronger concentrate or add more substance (change "C1") rather than adding solvent. In practice, this lock protects against typical data entry errors.

Can I count very small volumes, e.g. in milliliters?

Yes. In dilution mode, you can enter V2 in liters or milliliters, and the calculator will select a clear result (mL, and even µL for very small amounts). This is especially useful when you make working solutions on a small scale or when you measure "pipette".

What does "drops" mean in the dilution results?

This is an approximate auxiliary conversion when someone measures very small amounts at home (e.g. with a dropper).
