After failing to reach the line (for the second time in a row), press "Stop" - we will record your level and laps and estimate your VO₂max. The test requires approximately 20 m of free space.

Other tools you may find usefulBeep test - measure your fitness
The beep test (Multi-Stage Fitness Test, MSFT) involves running back and forth between markers20 metersapart, to the rhythm of beeps. The pace increases with each level - the signals sound more and more often. The test ends when you fail to reach the line before the signal twice in a row. The tool plays the signals, shows the current level and lap, and when finished estimatesVO₂max.
How to perform the test?
- mark a distance of 20 m (e.g. with tape or cones),
- click "Start" and run to the second line before you hear the signal,
- double signal means you go to a higher level (faster pace),
- when you miss twice - click "Stop" to save the result.
Beep test - rules and level table
Beep test (multistage fitness test, Léger test) is a shuttle run over a distance of20 metersto the rhythm of sound signals. You start at a pace of 8.5 km/h, and every level (about a minute) the pace increases by 0.5 km/h. You are eliminated if you fail to get to the line before the signal twice in a row. The result is recorded as a level/segment, e.g.9/5.
| Result (level) | Men 18–35 years | Women 18–35 years |
|---|---|---|
| 12+ | excellent | excellent (11+) |
| 10–11 | very good | good |
| 8–9 | good | average |
| 6–7 | average | below average |
| below 6 | weak | weak |
From the result you can estimateVO₂max(VO2 max): approximately level 9 ≈ 43–45 ml/kg/min. The beep test is used by services (police: usually required levels 7-10 depending on the formation), the army, sports clubs and schools.
How to prepare for the beep test
- Intervals2-3× a week: e.g. 10× (30 s fast / 30 s jog) - the test is an interval effort, not an even pace.
- Practiceturns: braking and starting from the line cost the most - the turning technique gives 1-2 levels.
- Test tactic: reach theline together with thesignal, not before (you save energy for higher levels).
- 48 hours before passing, skip heavy training; on test day - light warm-up and hydration.
You can also check your form before the testwith thereflex test, and you can calculate your training pace in thepace calculator.
Beep test, Cooper test and 12-minute run - what are the differences
All three measureperformance aerobicand allow you to estimate VO₂max, but they do it differently. The choice depends on the location, equipment and whether you want to run at a steady or increasing pace.
| Test | What is | Pace | Requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beep test (MSFT) | 20 m shuttle run to the rhythm of drop signals | increasing (interval, with turns) | 20 m straight, signal player |
| Cooper test | cover the longest distance possible in 12 minutes | equal, self-controlled | athletics track or measured route |
| 12-minute run | Cooper variant - the distance covered is what counts | equal to | as above |
Beep test more strongly engages theturnaround technique and resistance to interval fatigue(braking and acceleration), so it may be more difficult for people accustomed to steady running. The Cooper test is logistically simpler and better reflects a runner's fitness over the distance. Both can be converted to the same VO₂max, but the results don't always match up - someone who runs the Cooper great may perform worse in the beep test rounds.
Standards of the beep test in uniformed services
The beep test (or its equivalent) is sometimes part of fitness tests for services. The requirements depend on the formation, position, age and gender - thesevalues are approximate, because each recruitment has its own regulations, which are always worth checking from the source:
- Police and fire- a level around7-10is often expected for basic positions.
- Units with higher requirements (e.g. intervention forces, operational troops)- the bar is sometimes higher, around10-12+.
- Thresholds decreasing with age- older age groups usually have lower required levels.
When training for a specific threshold, practice exactly what the test checks: turns, intervals, and run-on-the-signal tactics. You can calculate your running training pace in thepace calculator.
