What exactly does the calculator count?
- Needed material lengthin cm and m (running meters).
- Pieces in a row– how many elements fit on the width of the bale.
- Number of rows– how many "strands" need to be placed to obtain the given number of pieces.
- Orientation– standard or 90° rotation (if allowed and more favorable).
- Width utilization i wastein %.
- Area(m²),cost(PLN) andweight(g) – if you provide price and GSM.
When are the results most accurate?
- When the elements are rectangular or can be sensibly enclosed in an "outline" rectangle.
- When you cut "in rows" (grid arrangement) without complicated nesting.
- When the allowance is known and constant and the pattern report is in the "along the length" direction.
- When the fabric does not have a demanding pile/nap direction (or you take it into account in the settings).
If you are working with very irregular patterns, treat the result asa conservative estimate ofand add some allowance.
How to use the fabric calculator? (step by step)
- Fabric width(e.g. 140/150/160 cm) - this is the real working width, not "on the label".
- Dimensions of the element(width and length in cm) – basic dimensions of the pattern.
- Number of pieces– how many elements you want to cut.
- Allowance / seam– the calculator will add2× allowanceto the dimensions of the element (on each side).
- Pattern Report(optional) - If the fabric has a repeating pattern, the height of the item is "rounded" to a multiple of the report.
- Rotate 90°– enable if the element can be rotated (no pattern/pile direction) and you want to reduce consumption.
- Price per meter i GSM– you will get the cost and weight of the entire outlay.
How does the "pattern report" work and why use it?
Thereport is a repeating section of the pattern (e.g. 10 cm, 32 cm) that causes the pieces to be arranged so that the pattern "fits" between the pieces. In practice, this means that you need a little more length because the layout is no longer perfectly "tight".
- When report > 0, the calculator adjusts the "height" of the element to the multiple of the report.
- This is an approximation, but it usually gives a good idea of the real margin needed to match the pattern.
- The larger the report, the greater the potential waste - it is worth counting before purchasing.
Eco-Score and waste – how to interpret the result?
Utilization and waste
Utilizationtells you how much bale width is "working" in the row.Wasteis a difference of up to 100%. If the waste result is high, check:
- whether the 90° rotation is enabled (if it can be),
- whether the allowance is not exaggerated,
- whether the dimensions of the element are correct (sometimes 1-2 cm changes the number of pieces in a row).
Eco-Score
Eco-Score is a quick efficiency rating (0-100) based on width utilization. To put it simply: the closer to 100, the less width loss in each row.
- 80–100– very good, usually profitable.
- 60–79– OK, but possible improvements.
- < 60– consider changing the element size, layout or fabric width.

FAQ
Why the calculator sometimes "selects rotation" and I cannot rotate the pattern?
The 90° rotation is a purely mathematical optimization (it often reduces the length of the material). If the fabric has a direction (pile, pile, "nap", one-sided print), turn off the rotation option - the result will be consistent with real cutting.
What if the item is wider than the fabric?
Then not even 1 piece will fit in the row (the calculator will show an error). Solutions: choose a wider bale, change the orientation (if possible), or break the item into pieces.
Does this replace professional pattern nesting?
This is a fast and very useful "row" model for estimating and planning purchases. Professional nesting for irregular shapes may give better use, but for most sewing work this estimation is practical enough.
How much stock should I add to the result?
Depending on the material and design, it is worth adding some allowance (e.g. for cutting errors, shrinkage, fabric defects, pattern matching). If you are sewing with a particular fabric for the first time, it is better to have a safety margin.
If you want to optimize your cost, perform a simple test: calculate the result with and without turnover, and then compare Eco-Score and waste. Sometimes a slight change in the allowance or size of an element can "jump" the number of pieces in a row and significantly reduce the necessary meters.
