European capitals quiz — test your geography

European capitals look like an easy subject until Switzerland, the Netherlands and Turkey turn up — three countries where „largest city" and „capital" are not the same thing. This quiz tests the political map of Europe: ten questions, no time limit.

The traps most people fall into

Switzerland — the seat of government is Bern, not Zurich or Geneva. Formally Switzerland has no capital written into its constitution; Bern is the „federal city". The Netherlands — the capital is Amsterdam, but the government, parliament and monarch sit in The Hague. Turkey — Ankara, not Istanbul.

Further along: Malta — Valletta, not Sliema. Liechtenstein — Vaduz. Monaco — a city-state, where the capital and the country are the same thing. Bosnia and Herzegovina — Sarajevo.

Capitals easily mixed up with each other

Slovakia and Slovenia: Bratislava and Ljubljana. Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia: Riga, Vilnius and Tallinn — the order is the thing most often scrambled. Moldova is Chișinău, not Kyiv, which is the capital of Ukraine.

Worth remembering too are the states that appear less often in the news: Andorra — Andorra la Vella, San Marino — San Marino, Montenegro — Podgorica, North Macedonia — Skopje, Albania — Tirana.

How the quiz works

Ten single-choice questions with a summary at the end. No sign-in and no time limit; everything is calculated in the browser, so you can retake it as often as you like.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions does the quiz have?

Ten single-choice questions, with no time limit and no sign-in.

What is the capital of Switzerland?

Bern. The constitution does not name a capital outright — Bern holds the status of „federal city" as the seat of government. Zurich and Geneva are larger but hold no such role.

Amsterdam or The Hague — which is the Dutch capital?

The capital is Amsterdam, but the government, parliament and monarch are seated in The Hague. It is the most frequently confused pair in the whole quiz.

What is the capital of Turkey?

Ankara. Istanbul is the country's largest city, but the capital moved to Ankara in 1923.

Which Baltic capitals are confused most often?

Riga (Latvia), Vilnius (Lithuania) and Tallinn (Estonia) — the usual error is assigning them to the wrong country.
