Formula for converting a dog's age - why is 1 year of a dog not always 7 years of a human?
For many years, it was believed that 1 year of a dog's life corresponds exactly to 7 years of a human's life. Today's veterinary medicine rejects this myth. Dogs develop extremely rapidly during the first two years of life - a one-year-old dog is already fully sexually mature, which is equivalent to a human teenager (approximately 15 years old). In the following years, the aging process slows down.
Additionally, the rate of aging depends greatly on the breed and size of the dog. Small breed dogs (e.g. Yorkie, Chihuahua) live much longer and age slower than large breed dogs (e.g. Great Dane, St. Bernard), which reach old age much faster.

Let's look at two examples showing how a dog's size affects its biological age based on the data in the table.
Example 1: Young Maltese.You have a 3-year-old Maltese (small breed, weight approx. 4 kg). How old is he in terms of human age?

The vet estimates the age of the dog mainly based on the condition of the teeth (degree of tooth wear, presence of tartar), as well as the presence of gray on the muzzle, the degree of clouding of the eye lenses (senile cataract) and the elasticity of the skin and the condition of the joints.
