How do we calculate protein needs? Norms and coefficients
Protein demand is a highly individual matter. The official RDA for sedentary adults sets a minimum intake of 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight per day. However, this value is only sufficient to avoid deficiencies in inactive people. In people who exercise regularly, this demand increases dramatically.
For endurance athletes, the recommended intake is in the range of 1.2 - 1.4 g/kg of body weight, while in strength and bodybuilding sports, the standard intake is 1.6 - 2.2 g/kg of body weight, and in periods of deep caloric deficit (reduction of fat tissue) up to 2.5 g/kg for maximum muscle protection. The best sources of protein in the diet and their division
It is worth remembering that not only the quantity but also the quality of the protein consumed is important. Proteins are divided into complete proteins (of animal origin), which contain a complete amino acid profile, and incomplete proteins (of plant origin), which lack one or several exogenous amino acids. The best sources of complete protein include lean meat (poultry, beef), fish, eggs, cottage cheese and protein supplements (WPC, WPI). People on a vegan and vegetarian diet can also easily meet their needs by combining various plant sources, such as soy (tofu, tempeh), legumes (lentils, chickpeas, beans), nuts and cereals.
