Mathematical basis for determining pipe mass and the role of material density
The calculator algorithm is based on classic stereometric formulas. To calculate the weight of a pipe, first the volume of the material from which it is made is determined. This volume is the difference between the volume of the outer cylinder (described by the outer diameter) and the inner cylinder (whose diameter is reduced by twice the pipe wall thickness). The geometric volume in cubic meters thus obtained is then multiplied by the specific density of the selected material, which gives the final mass.
The density of the material is a key parameter because pipes with identical external dimensions may differ in weight even several times depending on the material. For example, the density of steel is about 7,850 kilograms per cubic meter, copper is close to 8,960, and PVC plastic is only about 1,400. Using our calculator, you do not have to look for these values in physical tables yourself - the system has implemented average density values for the most popular construction and installation materials.

Remember that the wall thickness should be less than the pipe radius, otherwise the calculations will be geometrically impossible. The weight of a running meter of pipe is the weight of a section exactly 1 meter long. It is calculated as the volume of a circular ring with a pipe wall thickness and a height of 1 meter, multiplied by the density of the material.
What is the density of black steel used in the calculator?
In our calculator, the commonly used density value of 7850 kg/m³ (or 7.85 g/cm³) was assumed for standard structural steel (black steel).
Does the calculator take into account metallurgical tolerances for wall thickness?
The calculator performs theoretical calculations based on the entered nominal dimensions. The actual weight of the pipes may vary slightly within the tolerance limits specified by metallurgical standards (e.g. EN 10216).
Can I calculate the weight of a square or rectangular pipe?
This particular calculator is dedicated to round pipes. Dedicated steel profile calculators are used to calculate the weight of closed square and rectangular profiles.
Why is a copper pipe heavier than a steel pipe of the same dimensions?
Copper has a higher specific density (approx. 8960 kg/m³) than steel (approx. 7850 kg/m³), which means that with identical geometry, a copper pipe will be approximately 14% heavier than a steel one.
