Main rules for spelling numbers in words in Polish
Correct spelling of numbers in Polish can be a challenge due to complicated declination and rules regarding spaces. Here are the most important rules:
- Separation of notation:We write multi-digit numbers separately (e.g. 1500 is "one thousand five hundred", not "one thousand five hundred"). The exception are compound numbers with the element "half" (e.g. "one and a half").
- Agreement with a noun (zloty and cents):The form of the currency depends on the last digit of the number. We write: 1 zloty, 2 zloty, 5 zloty, 22 zloty, but 25 zloty.
- Notation of decimal fractions:The fractional part can be written as a fraction (e.g. 12.50 is "twelve and fifty hundredths" or in the shortened financial form "12 PLN 50/100").
- Ordinal numbers:Declined by cases, numbers and genders (e.g. "first", "first", "firsts").
