The most common difficulties in English grammar

Present Perfect vs Past Simple: "I have seen" vs "I saw" - Poles often confuse. Polish has only one "past tense". Conditionals: If I were/was, If I had known... Prepositions: "interested IN", "good AT", "depend ON" – there are no rules, you have to remember. Phrasal verbs: "give up" vs "give in" vs "give away". Articles: a/an/the – Polish has no articles.

English tenses – division

Present: Simple (I work), Continuous (I am working), Perfect (I have worked), Perfect Continuous (I have been working). Past: Simple (I worked), Continuous (I was working), Perfect (I had worked), Perfect Continuous (I had been working). Future: will/going to/Present Continuous for future. 16 combinations, but 5-6 most important in everyday use.

Conditionals

Zero conditional: If you heat water, it boils (scientific facts). First: If it rains, I will stay (real future). Second: If I had money, I would travel (unreal present). Third: If I had studied, I would have passed (unreal past). Mixed: If I had been born rich, I would be happy now (mix of past and present).

Phrasal verbs – how to learn

Strategy: learn through context, not lists. Similar groups: "take" phrasal verbs at once (take off, take up, take on, take over). Literal vs idiomatic: "give up" (not literally "to give up"). Common in speech: give up, look up, find out, run out of, come up with. Less in formal writing.
