Structure of six-point Braille
The basic unit of Braille is the so-called **forming character** (six-point), consisting of six fields arranged in two vertical columns of three points each. These points are traditionally numbered from 1 to 6:
- Left column: **point 1** (top), **point 2** (middle), **point 3** (bottom)
- Right column: **point 4** (top), **point 5** (middle), **point 6** (bottom)
Through emphasizing one or more of these six points can produce exactly \( 2^6 = 64 \) unique combinations (including the absence of any points, i.e. a space). This allows you to encode all letters of the alphabet, numbers, punctuation marks and mathematical and musical symbols.

Due to the phonetic and orthographic specificity of individual national languages, the Braille alphabet has local modifications. The table below shows the notation of Polish diacritics in the Braille system:

How to use numbers and capital letters in Braille?
Since 64 combinations are too few to assign separate symbols for lowercase letters, uppercase letters and numbers, the so-called **modifier characters** (prefixes):
- Uppercase character: Using a symbol consisting of the point 6 (⠠) immediately before a letter means that the next letter is uppercase.
- Numeric character (Number): Using a symbol consisting of dots 3, 4, 5, 6 (⠼) switches the reading mode to digits. Then the letters 'a' to 'j' represent the digits 1 to 9 and 0, respectively (e.g. ⠼⠁ is the digit 1, and ⠼⠚ is the digit 0).
