Arithmetic mean and weighted average grades
In the Polish education system (both in primary and secondary schools and at universities) there are two main ways of calculating the average grade:
- Arithmetic mean:All grades are treated as equally important. It is calculated by adding all the grades and dividing the sum by their number. \[ \text{Average} = \frac{\sum_{i=1}^{n} x_i}{n} \]
- Weighted average:Each grade is assigned a weight reflecting its importance in the entire teaching process. For example, tests and exams may have a weight of 3 or 4, quizzes may have a weight of 2, and homework assignments may have a weight of 1. The formula for the weighted average is as follows: \[ \text{Weighted average} = \frac{\sum_{i=1}^{n} (x_i \cdot w_i)}{\sum_{i=1}^{n} w_i} \] Where \( x_i \) is a specific rating and \( w_i \) is the weight assigned to that rating.
Formula for calculating the required grade for the last test
If you know your current grades and the weight of the last test ahead of you, you can determine the required grade (\( x_{\text{required}} \)) by transforming the formula into a weighted average. Let's assume your target GPA is \( S_{\text{target}} \), the sum of the products of past grades and their weights is \( \sum (x_{\text{dot}} \cdot w_{\text{dot}}) \), the sum of the weights of past grades is \( \sum w_{\text{dot}} \), and the weight of the upcoming test is \( w_{\text{last}} \). The formula takes the form:

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
What should I do if the calculator shows that I need to receive a grade, e.g. 4.35?
Since there is no grade of 4.35 in the traditional school scale, this means that a grade of 4 (good) will be insufficient to achieve the goal. To implement your plan and get a higher average, you must receive a grade of at least very good (5) on the test or negotiate with the teacher to improve another, earlier grade.
Does the calculator take into account plus (+) and minus (-) ratings?
Yes, our calculator supports fractional grade values. In the Polish education system, grades with pluses and minuses are most often converted into decimal values in accordance with the statute of a given school (e.g. plus is usually +0.25 or +0.5, and minus is -0.25 or -0.5). You can enter these values directly into the rating fields (e.g. 4.5 for a four plus rating).
From what average is the grade rounded up at school?
The rules for rounding final grades are not uniform for the entire country and are regulated by the In-school Assessment System (WSO) included in the statute of a given institution. Very often, the threshold for a higher grade is .75 (e.g. an average of 3.75 allows for a grade of 4), and sometimes it is .50 or .60. It is worth checking what the threshold is in your school and entering it as a goal in the calculator.
Does the weight of the rating matter more than the rating itself?
Definitely yes. In a weighted average system, a grade with a higher weight has a much greater impact on the final result than a grade with a low weight. For example, getting a 1 (1) with a weight of 4 will drastically lower your average and will be difficult to compensate even with a few A's with a weight of 1. That's why it's so important to focus on preparing for tests marked with high weights.
What is a weighted average and how does it differ from a regular average?
The simple (arithmetic) average adds up all the grades and divides them by their number, treating the test in the same way as a large semester exam. The weighted average assigns a significance factor (weight) to each step. Thanks to this, the grade from the key test has a several times greater impact on the final grade than a minor oral answer.
