Fahrenheit (°F) is a temperature scale used mainly in the USA. The rest of the world uses Celsius (°C). Science uses Kelvin (K). The tool converts between all three scales with an explanation of the formulas and a table of common reference values.
Conversion formulas
°F to °C: C = (F - 32) × 5/9. Example: 98.6°F = (98.6 - 32) × 5/9 = 66.6 × 0.556 = 37°C (body temperature). °C to °F: F = C × 9/5 + 32. Example: 100°C = 100 × 1.8 + 32 = 212°F. Kelvin: K = C + 273.15. °F per K: K = (F - 32) × 5/9 + 273.15.
Fahrenheit Reference Points
32°F = 0°C = 273.15K (water freezing). 98.6°F = 37°C (human body temperature). 212°F = 100°C = 373.15K (boiling water at sea level). -40°F = -40°C (the only point where F = C). 72°F = 22.2°C (comfortable US room temperature). 350°F = 177°C (oven baking). 451°F = 233°C (Bradbury's novel title = paper burning temperature).
History of Temperature Scales
Fahrenheit (1724): Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit. 0°F = ice + salt mixture (the lowest temperature available to it). 96°F ≈ body temperature (modified to 98.6°F). Celsius (1742): Anders Celsius. Originally inverted (0 = boiling, 100 = freezing)! Linnaeus/Strömer reversed to its current form. Kelvin (1848): Lord Kelvin, absolute zero (-273.15°C).
Mental conversion (approximations)
°F → °C fast: subtract 30, divide by 2. 70°F: (70-30)/2 = 20°C (exactly 21.1°C, error 1°). 90°F: (90-30)/2 = 30°C (exactly 32.2°C, error 2°). °C → °F fast: multiply by 2, add 30. 20°C: 20×2+30 = 70°F (exactly 68°F). For accuracy: use a tool.
FAQ
Why does the US use Fahrenheit?
History: Fahrenheit (1724) was a popular standard for 50 years before Celsius. Change too expensive: laws, technical literature, equipment, habits. Three countries using F: USA, Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Belize (and Palau). Science in the USA: Celsius and Kelvin. Medicine: both °F and °C. UK: officially Celsius, colloquially Fahrenheit for weather (older generations).
What is Kelvin and when is it used?
Kelvin: the absolute temperature scale. 0 K = absolute zero (-273.15°C) = temperature at which atoms stop moving (impossible to achieve). Used: physics, astronomy, chemistry (thermodynamics, kinetics). Star temperature: Sun ≈ 5778 K. Temperature in space: 2.7 K (cosmic background radiation). LED temperature color: 2700K = warm white, 6500K = cold daylight.
What temperature is "hot" and "cold"?
Polish context: below 0°C = frost. 0-10°C = cold. 10-20°C = cool. 20-25°C = pleasant. 25-30°C = warm. Above 30°C = hot. USA context: 32°F and below = frost. 50°F = chilly. 70-75°F = comfortable. 90°F+ = hot. Australian heat: 104°F (40°C) is a normal summer.
How to check the temperature in a US recipe?
350°F = 175°C (baking standard). 375°F = 190°C. 400°F = 205°C. 425°F = 220°C. 450°F = 230°C. Oven: turn on "convection" (-15-20°C is equivalent). Meat thermometer: medium rare beef = 130°F (54°C). Well done = 160°F (71°C). Dough ready: 190-200°F (87-93°C).
Fahrenheit converter online vs offline?
Online tool: fast, always correct, available. Calculator (offline): F1-F2 formula. iPhone Siri: "what is 100 Fahrenheit in Celsius." Google: type "100F in C". Apple Watch temperature: you can set it in settings. Weather Pulse: Many weather apps allow you to switch units.
