String frequencies in standard guitar tuning (EADGBE)
A traditional six-string guitar is tuned in a system based on perfect fourths and one major third. The table below shows the string names, note designations, and exact frequencies in hertz (Hz) for standard tuning:

Tuner-supported alternative tunings
In addition to the standard tuning, guitarists often use alternative string arrangements to make playing easier or to obtain a different sound:
- Drop D (DADGBE):The most popular tuning in rock and metal music. The thickest E string is lowered a whole step to the note D. This allows you to play Power Chord chords with one finger.
- Half-Step Down (Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb):All strings are lowered by a semitone. It gives the instrument a warmer, heavier sound and reduces string tension (often used by, for example, Jimi Hendrix or Guns N' Roses).
- Open D (DADF#AD):Open outfit. After striking all the strings without pressing the frets, the guitar produces a pure D major chord. Very popular in Slide play and folk music.
How to tune your guitar step by step using an online tuner?
To properly tune your instrument using our online tuner, follow the instructions below:
- Allow access to the microphone:Once the page opens, click the "Start tuner" button and accept the browser's request for access to the microphone of your computer or phone.
- Quiet the surroundings:Make sure the room is quiet. Background noises (e.g. TV on, loud conversation) may interfere with the tone detection algorithm.
- Pluck the string:Play a single slow string and let it sound.
- Read the tuner reading:Look at the tuner dial:
- If the pointer deflects to the left (sounds too low/flat), tighten the string by turning the key.
- If the pointer swings to the right (sounds too high/sharp), loosen the string.
- Green backlight and indicator in the center indicate perfect outfit.
- Repeat for all strings:Go through all strings 6 to 1 in order.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Why do newly installed strings go out of tune very quickly?
New strings (both nylon on classical guitars and metal on acoustic and electric guitars) need time to stretch and settle on the bridge and key pegs. For the first few days after wearing, they will naturally sag and make your outfit look lower. To speed up this process, after installation, gently stretch the strings with your fingers along the entire length of the neck and re-tune them.
How does the pitch detection algorithm work in the online tuner?
Our tuner uses the Web Audio API to capture the signal from the microphone. Then, a frequency analysis algorithm (usually autocorrelation or FFT - Fast Fourier Transform) processes the sound waves and determines their fundamental frequency in hertz (Hz), which it compares with the standard for a given note.
What is the difference between a classical, acoustic and electric guitar in terms of tuning?
All these guitars have the same standard tuning (EADGBE) and are tuned the same way. The difference lies in the physics of the instrument: a classical guitar has nylon strings, which are softer and more susceptible to temperature changes. Acoustic and electric guitars have metal strings with much greater tension, which requires more solid tuners.
What is a chromatic reed?
The chromatic reed (unlike simple guitar reeds) can detect and identify any of the 12 notes of the chromatic scale (semitones), not just the 6 standard guitar notes. This allows you to tune the instrument to any, even the most unusual, alternative tuning and to tune other instruments (e.g. ukulele, violin).
What should I do if the tuner does not respond to the sound of my guitar?
Make sure you have correctly granted permission to access your microphone in your browser settings. Also check that the correct input microphone is selected in the operating system and that its gain level is not set to zero. For electric instruments not connected to an amplifier, move the soundboard or neck closer to the microphone.
