What is a dipole moment
The dipole moment (p) is a vector physical quantity describing the separation of positive and negative charges in a system. The greater the torque, the stronger the electric field produced by the dipole and the greater its ability to interact with other particles. In chemistry, the dipole moment determines the polarity of molecules, and in physics - the nature of the electrostatic field.
Basic dipole moment formula
p = q · d
where:
p – dipole moment [C m]
q – charge value [C]
d – distance between charges [m]
The dipole moment vector is directed from the negative to the positive charge. The value depends linearly on the loads and the distance between them, so even a small load with a large separation can generate a significant torque.
The electric field produced by the dipole
E = (1 / 4πε₀) · (p / r³) · (2cosθ · r̂ + sinθ · θ̂)
The strength of the dipole field decreases with the cube of the distance (1/r³). Towards the dipole axis, the field has the greatest value, and in the perpendicular plane - it is weaker by half.
Dipole moment units
| Unit | Symbol | Equivalence |
|---|---|---|
| Coulombometer | C m | SI unit |
| Debye | D | 1 D = 3.33564×10⁻³⁰ C m |
| Statcoulomb cm | esu cm | 1 esu cm = 10⁻¹⁸ C m |
How to use the calculator
- Enter the value of the charge in coulombs (C) or micro-/nano-coulombs.
- Enter the distance between the loads in meters.
- ClickCalculate– you will get the dipole moment in C m and Debye.
- You can also enter angle and distance to calculate the dipole field.
Calculation examples
System of two charges ±1 µC
q = 1×10⁻⁶ C, d = 0.05 m → p = 5×10⁻⁸ C m = 1.5×10²² D.
Water molecule H₂O
Dipole moment = 6.17×10⁻³⁰ C·m = 1.85 D.
This is a classic example of a polar molecule.
HCl molecule
Dipole moment = 3.6×10⁻³⁰ C·m = 1.08 D.
The field in the dipole axis is stronger than in the perpendicular plane.
Microscopic system
q = 2×10⁻⁹ C, d = 0.02 m → p = 4×10⁻¹¹ C m = 1.2×10¹⁹ D.
Related formulas
Energy of a dipole in an electric field:
U = -p · E · cosθ
The moment of force acting on the dipole:
M = p × E
The dipole in the electric field is positioned in such a way that its moment is parallel to the direction of the field - then the energy of the system is minimal.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
How to convert Debye to coulombometers?
1 D = 3.33564×10⁻³⁰ C m. Simply multiply the value in Debye by this factor.
What are the typical values for the dipole moment of molecules?
For polar molecules: 0.5–5 D, for nonpolar molecules: ~0 D.
Does the calculator work for magnetic dipoles?
No, it only applies to electric dipoles. For magnetic ones, the same principle applies, but with different units (A·m²).
Can the dipole moment be zero?
Yes – in symmetrical molecules, where the center of the positive charge coincides with the negative one.
Applications of the dipole moment
- Determining the polarity of chemical molecules.
- Analysis of intermolecular interactions.
- Modeling of electrostatic fields in nanostructures.
- Calculations of potential energy in an electric field.
- Design of dielectric materials and sensors.
Summary:The dipole moment calculator allows you to quickly calculate the force of interaction between charges and the torque value in an electrical system. It allows you to analyze both simple physical systems and complex polar molecules in chemistry and materials science.
