How to Use the Tool: Select a File and Click Clean

The entire cleanup comes down to two actions: choosing a file and one click. You do not need to configure or type anything.

1. Click the file picker and select one image of your signature — a scan, a phone photo, or a screenshot from a document.
2. Click the Clean button. The tool starts working immediately.
3. After a moment, a preview of the result and a 'background removed' message appear below the button.
4. Click the download link named signature.png to save the finished file to your drive.

The selected image is loaded at its original size — the tool does not shrink, rotate, or change its orientation. All processing happens in your browser, and the file is never sent anywhere, so you can check the result without privacy concerns. If you want to improve the effect, simply select a different file and click Clean again.

How Brightness Thresholding Works and Where the Transparent Background Comes From

The tool looks at each pixel in the image individually and evaluates how bright it is. It calculates brightness as a weighted average of three color components: brightness = 0.3 × red + 0.59 × green + 0.11 × blue. Green has the largest influence, red medium, and blue the smallest — so the result matches what the eye perceives as brightness.

Next, a simple threshold applies: if brightness is above 170 (on a scale up to 255), the pixel becomes fully transparent. If it is lower, the pixel gets partial transparency — the darker it is, the more opaque it becomes. That is why the black strokes of the signature remain visible, while lighter ink fragments and paper noise fade.

At the same time, the color of pixels covered by ink is converted to grayscale: dark strokes become black or nearly black, and intermediate shades darken. This is intentional — it gives a stronger, even outline on a transparent background. Finally, the image is saved as PNG, because that format supports transparency.

How to Prepare a Signature Scan: Contrast, White Background, No Shadows

The quality of the result depends mostly on what you upload. A few simple rules make a big difference:

• White, smooth background — ideally a clean sheet of paper without lines, grids, or printing. Colored or printed paper makes it harder to separate the signature from the background.
• Contrast — a dark, preferably black pen on light paper. Pencil and pale blue ink produce a weaker result.
• No shadows — even lighting, without a lamp to the side and without the shadow of your hand or phone. A shadow is a dark area that will be treated as part of the signature.
• Straight — take the photo from above, parallel to the paper. The tool does not straighten or rotate the image, so a tilted scan will stay tilted.
• Sufficient resolution — an image that is too small will produce jagged edges. A phone photo in good light is usually enough.

If you have a choice, scan the signature with a scanner or take a photo in bright light without filters. Leave cropping and straightening for later — before uploading, a good scan by itself is usually enough.

Limitations: What This Tool Will Not Do

The tool does one thing and does it in a fixed way. It is worth knowing where its capabilities end so you do not waste time on a result that cannot be achieved.

• One file at a time — only a single image is supported; there is no batch mode or file queue.
• No threshold settings — there is no slider or field where you can change the brightness level. The threshold is fixed, so with gray paper or an underexposed photo, some background may remain.
• Color scans lose color — the result is in shades of gray. A blue pen will not stay blue.
• No cropping or straightening — the tool does not cut the signature out of the page, rotate it, or correct perspective. You set the frame and orientation yourself.
• No denoising or smoothing — small specks, ink dots, and paper irregularities will remain if they are dark enough.
• Size unchanged — nothing is scaled, so a large scan stays large, and processing a larger image takes longer.
• An image that already has a transparent background — the tool evaluates pixel brightness, not whether the background was transparent, so the result may look different from what you expect.

Always inspect the result before using it. Check whether the background is truly transparent, whether any strokes have disappeared, and whether a gray paper outline remains.

How to Save the PNG Result and Insert the Signature into a Document

After you click Clean, a download link named signature.png appears. Click it, and the file goes to your browser's downloads — you can also drag it straight to your desktop.

1. In a text editor, such as Word, Google Docs, or LibreOffice, choose Insert → Image and select the downloaded file.
2. Adjust the size by dragging a corner — keep the proportions so the signature is not stretched.
3. In a PDF form or document-signing system, insert the image where the signature belongs. A PNG with a transparent background fits best there because it does not cover the content underneath.

One practical note: not every program and not every printer preserves transparency when exporting to PDF or printing — the transparent background may be replaced with white. On white paper this usually makes no difference, but it is worth checking the print preview. After downloading, you can rename the file to anything you like and upload it to a document, form, or store where you sell products with a signature, such as Amazon, Etsy, or Shopify.
