How to improve your swimming pace? Practical tips
- Improve your technique and posture (streamlined):Water has enormous resistance (it is about 800 times denser than air). Instead of putting more force into the movement, focus on reducing frontal resistance by keeping your body straight (lying high in the water), tucking your head, and rotating your hips effectively.
- Extend your swimming stride (DPS – Distance Per Stroke):Try to cover as much distance as possible with one stroke. Count your cycles in a 25-meter pool and strive to reduce this number while maintaining optimal speed.
- Introduce interval training:Instead of swimming at a constant, low speed, perform interval tasks (e.g. \( 10 \times 100\text{m} \) at a pace similar to the starting pace with a break of 15-20 seconds). This will allow the circulatory system and muscles to adapt to higher speeds.
- Work on turns and footwork:Effective wall kicks and footwork (especially in the dolphin phase underwater) allow you to save energy and maintain a high initial speed in any pool.

What is the difference in calculating swimming pace in a 25m and 50m pool?
The mathematical definition of 100-meter pace remains the same, but in practice swimming in a 50-meter pool (the so-called Olympic long pool) is about 1 to 3 seconds slower for every 100 meters than in a 25-meter pool. This is due to the fact that in a 25m pool we make twice as many turns and pushes off the wall, which allows us to rest and use the free sliding speed.
What is the average speed of a crawl swim for a beginner?
Beginners who have just mastered the freestyle technique (crawl) usually swim at a pace of 2:15 to 2:45 per 100 meters. Intermediate swimmers can easily maintain a pace of 1:45 - 2:00/100 m, while athletes training in sports clubs swim training series at a pace below 1:15 - 1:20/100 m.
How does the calculator convert pace to speed in km/h?
To convert pace (e.g. 2:00/100m) to km/h, divide the distance of 100 meters (0.1 km) by the time expressed in hours. A time of 2 minutes is \( 2 / 60 = 0.0333 \) hours. So the speed is: \( 0.1 \text{ km} / 0.0333 \text{ h} = 3 \text{ km/h} \). The simplified formula is: \( V \text{ (km/h)} = 360 / T \text{ (where T is the pace in seconds per 100m)} \).
What does the term Swolf mean in sports watches and how does it relate to pace?
Swolf is an indicator of swimming efficiency, which is the sum of the time (in seconds) needed to swim one length of the pool and the number of arm movements performed over this distance (e.g. 30 seconds + 18 movements = Swolf 48). A lower Swolf score means higher efficiency (you swim faster with fewer strokes), which translates directly into a better pace that can be maintained over longer distances.
Is swimming pace different in open water (e.g. lake, sea) than in a swimming pool?
Yes. In open water, the pace is usually slower due to the lack of walls to bounce on, more difficult navigation (the need to raise your head in front of you, which disturbs your silhouette), water waves and currents. On the other hand, using wetsuits (neoprene) improves buoyancy and body position, which can speed up the swimmer by approximately 5-10 seconds for every 100 meters.
