Sand density is a key physical parameter that directly affects the conversion of volume to weight. It is worth remembering that sand is not a uniform material. Its density depends on the fraction (grain size), origin and, most importantly, humidity level. Dry quartz sand has a density ranging from 1,500 to 1,600 kg/m³, while wet or highly compacted sand can weigh up to 1,900 or 2,000 kg/m³. This difference is so significant that it can completely change the delivery logistics. Correctly determining the density protects you from a situation where the volume ordered does not match the tonnage delivered by the truck to the construction site. To calculate the amount of sand per square meter, multiply the area of one square meter by the planned layer thickness in meters. For example, for a layer of 10 centimeters (0.1 m) thick on an area of 1 m², you need exactly 0.1 cubic meter of sand. When standard density is taken into account, this amounts to approximately 160 kilograms of material for each square meter of the project.
What is the average weight of one cubic meter of sand?
The average weight of one cubic meter (m³) of dry sand is 1,500 to 1,600 kilograms, or 1.5 to 1.6 tons. In the case of wet sand that has absorbed rain moisture or comes directly from washing, this weight can increase to 1.8 - 2.0 tons per cubic meter. It is always worth checking with the supplier what type of aggregate you are ordering.
Does sand humidity affect its volume and weight?
Yes, humidity has a huge impact on the physical properties of sand. Water filling the pores between sand grains significantly increases its specific gravity, which means that the same cubic meter of sand will be much heavier when wet. In addition, wet sand tends to swell (water cohesion), which may appear to increase its volume and, after drying and compacting, it may settle.
How much sand is needed for a standard garden sandbox?
A standard sandbox with dimensions of 150 by 150 centimeters (1.5 m x 1.5 m) and a filling depth of 20 centimeters (0.2 m) requires approximately 0.45 cubic meters of sand. This translates into approximately 720 kilograms of sand, which means the need to purchase approximately 29-30 bags of sand with a standard weight of 25 kg each.
How to convert tons of sand to cubic meters?
Converting tons of sand to cubic meters requires dividing the weight in tons by the density of the sand, expressed in tons per cubic meter. For example, if you have 5 tons of sand with a standard density of 1.6 t/m³, you divide 5 by 1.6, which gives approximately 3,125 cubic meters of sand.
