Robots.txt is supposedly "just" a simple text file, but it can save SEO, the server and your nerves. This generator allows you to create sensible rules in a few seconds: you choose a strategy, add pathsAllow/Disallow, addSitemapand that's it - you get a clean result to paste into/robots.txt.
In practice, robots.txt has one task: to tell robots where they can enter and where it is not worth entering. And this is where the magic comes in: well-set rules can cut out junk addresses (internal search engines, parameters, login panels) and at the same time leave alone what is supposed to be indexed. This generator is designed precisely for this approach: quickly, clearly and without any fuss.
What do you get as a result of
The generator builds a ready-made file in the correct format:User-agentsection, thenrules Disallow andAllow, and finally the optionalSitemapand (if you want) theHostdirective. You also get simple statistics: number of lines and size in bytes - perfect when you want to keep order and not oversize the file.
The most important thing: the result is immediately "for production". You copy or download it asrobots.txtand put it in the main domain directory.
Why "smart" makes sense
The most common mistake is blind blocking: someone putsDisallow: /"because they want privacy" and then is surprised that nothing grows on Google.Smart SEOmode is designed as a reasonable compromise: it blocks typical places that generate clutter (e.g. login or search engine), but does not limit the entire page.
If you're not sure, start with Smart and refine your lists later. This is an approach that rarely does any harm.
How to use a generator so as not to shoot yourself in the foot
The simplest workflow looks like this: you choose a strategy, check the list of bots, add paths, add a site map and generate. But the devil is in the details. Robots.txt is not a "lock" - it is more of a road sign. Honest bots read it, but if something is to be hidden, you need authorization, not Disallow. On the other hand, even a "road sign" can organize traffic and relieve the server.
- Choose a strategy
If you have WordPress and don't want to think - chooseWordPress. If you want a safe start -Smart SEO. Allow all and Block allshould be treated as extreme modes: for testing, staging or "I know what I'm doing" situations. - Establish bots (User Agents)
The asterisk*means "everyone". If you want to add specific players, use quick buttons (e.g. Google, Bing) and add the rest in new lines. This is important because one entry = one user-agent in the section. - Add Disallow and Allow
Block what generates duplication and junk crawling (e.g. search engines, login panels). Allow is used when you want to leave an exception within a lock. If you're not sure, don't make up ideas. Better rules fewer, but sensible ones. - Add Sitemap
Once you have your sitemap, enter the full URL. It's a simple thing, but it really helps bots find important URLs. - Options: Crawl-delay, Host, duplicates
Set crawl-delay carefully (and probably only when the server i
