Other tools you may find useful

IndexNow is an open protocol a website uses to tell search engines that a URL was added, changed or deleted. Instead of waiting for a crawler to find the change, you send a list of URLs, and the search engine can visit them right away. This tool runs the whole process in your browser: it generates a key, checks the key file on your site and sends the submission.

How to submit URLs with IndexNow, step by step

  1. Enter your domain, e.g. www.yoursite.com. The tool removes the protocol and path if you paste a full URL.
  2. Generate a key with the button or type your own. A key is 8 to 128 characters: letters, digits and hyphens. A generated key has 32 hexadecimal characters.
  3. Put the key file on your site. Download the key.txt file and upload it to the root of your domain so it is reachable at https://yourdomain/key.txt. The file must contain only the key.
  4. Check the key file. The tool fetches the file from your site and compares its content with the key. You will see the response code or a note that the content does not match.
  5. Paste the URLs (one per line) and click "Submit URLs". The result shows the search engine's response code with an explanation.

Which search engines support IndexNow

A submission sent to one endpoint is shared with all search engines participating in the protocol, so by default the tool sends to the shared api.indexnow.org endpoint. You can also pick a specific search engine's endpoint.

Search engineSubmission endpoint
Shared IndexNow endpointapi.indexnow.org/indexnow
Microsoft Bingwww.bing.com/indexnow
Yandexyandex.com/indexnow
Seznamsearch.seznam.cz/indexnow
Naversearchadvisor.naver.com/indexnow
Yepindexnow.yep.com/indexnow

Google does not use IndexNow. Submit new URLs there through your sitemap in Google Search Console.

What the response codes mean

CodeMeaningWhat to do
200URLs acceptedNothing, the submission arrived.
202URLs accepted, key pending validationMake sure the key file is reachable.
400Invalid request formatCheck the domain and the URLs.
403Key not validThe search engine did not find the key file or its content does not match.
422URLs outside the domain or key mismatchSubmit only URLs from the domain the key belongs to.
429Too many requestsWait and submit less often, ideally only URLs that really changed.

Rules worth remembering

  • Submit changes only. IndexNow is for reporting new, updated or deleted URLs, not for sending your whole site every hour.
  • URLs must belong to the key's domain. The tool skips lines from another domain and lists them separately instead of sending a submission the search engine would reject.
  • The key location sets the scope. If the key file sits in a subdirectory (you enter it in the "Key file location" field), the key covers only URLs in that directory.
  • www and non-www are different hosts. The domain in the submission must match the URLs: www.yoursite.com and yoursite.com are two different hosts for IndexNow.
  • Submit deleted URLs too. The search engine visits them, sees a 404 or 410 code and removes them from results sooner.

Limits in this tool

You can submit up to 1000 URLs at once (the protocol allows more, but submissions that large are better sent from your server, for example by a CMS plugin). One IP address can send 10 submissions per hour and check the key file 20 times in 10 minutes. Duplicate URLs are removed before sending.

Before submitting, make sure the site can be indexed. The robots.txt generator and the XML sitemap validator can help.

Frequently asked questions

Does IndexNow speed up indexing in Google?

No. Google does not participate in IndexNow. The protocol works with Bing, Yandex, Seznam, Naver and Yep. For Google, use a sitemap and Search Console.

Does a submission guarantee the page will appear in results?

No. IndexNow only tells the search engine about the change. Whether and when the page is indexed is up to the search engine.

Where exactly should the key file go?

The simplest place is the root of your domain, named key.txt, e.g. https://www.yoursite.com/b3f6….txt. The file must contain only the key, with no spaces or line breaks before it.

Why do I get 202 instead of 200?

The search engine accepted the URLs but has not validated the key yet. This is normal for the first submission with a new key, and the key file must stay on the site.

Can I use one key for several sites?

Each domain needs its own key file. You can reuse the same string, but it is safer to generate a separate key for each domain.

Does the tool store my key and URLs?

No. The key and URLs are used only to send the submission and check the file. They are not saved to the history or to the tool's logs.
