How to effectively teach a child the multiplication table? Proven pedagogical methods
Learning the multiplication tables by heart (so-called "memorization") can be boring and frustrating for children. Experienced teachers recommend using methods based on understanding the properties of mathematical operations and on fun:
- The principle of commutative multiplication (A · B = B · A):This is the most important facilitation. Showing your child that 6 · 7 is exactly the same as 7 · 6 reduces the number of operations to learn by half!
- Multiplying by 9 on the fingers:We stretch both hands in front of us. If we want to multiply 9 by 4, we bend the fourth finger from the left. The fingers on the left side of the bent finger indicate tens (3), and on the right, ones (6) - the result is 36. This method works for any multiplication of 9 by numbers from 1 to 10.
- Step by step (easy at first):Start learning by multiplying by 1, 2, 5 and 10. Children learn these operations instantly. Then move on to the squares of the numbers (e.g. 3 · 3 = 9, 6 · 6 = 36), and leave the most difficult combinations for last (e.g. 7 · 8, 6 · 7).
- Pythagorean table:A classic square with numbers on the vertical and horizontal axes, where the result is read at the intersection of the row and column. Such visualization allows the child to see symmetry and the geometric meaning of multiplication (as the area of a rectangle).
