Nautical mile (nautical mile, symbol: NM or Mm) is an international unit of distance commonly used in maritime navigation and aviation. Unlike the land mile (English:statute mile), the sea mile was not created by royal decrees, but has a deep geographical justification. It was originally defined as the length of one arcminute (1/60th of a degree) of an arc of the Earth's meridian. Because the Earth is not a perfect sphere and its shape is similar to a geoid (it is flattened at the poles), this length varies slightly depending on latitude. To avoid confusion, its value was unified in 1929 at the International Hydrographic Conference in Monaco.

Formula to convert nautical miles (NM) to kilometers (km) and meters (m)
The international standard defines the length of a nautical mile as a fixed metric value:
1 NM = 1,852 meters (1,852 km)
To convert a distance expressed in nautical miles (dNM) into kilometers (dkm), multiply the number of nautical miles by 1.852:
