A mile (mile) is a unit of length used mainly in the US, UK and aviation. There are several types: land mile (statute mile), nautical mile, English mile. The tool converts between miles and kilometers with a reference table.
Mile types and converters
Land mile (statute mile, mi): 1 mi = 1.60934 km = 1609.34 m. Used in the USA, UK (road, running, domestic aviation). Nautical mile (nautical mile, nmi): 1 nmi = 1,852 km = 1,852 m. Used in sailing and aviation. Wick = 1 nmi/h. Scandinavian miles (miles): 10 km (Sweden, Norway) – different unit!
Speed – mph per km/h
1 mph (mile per hour) = 1.60934 km/h. Popular values: 30 mph = 48.3 km/h (UK/US city). 60 mph ≈ 97 km/h (UK motorway old limit). 70 mph ≈ 113 km/h (UK highway present). 100 km/h ≈ 62.1 mph. 130 km/h ≈ 80.8 mph. Formula: km/h = mph × 1.60934.
Applications of the mile converter
Sports and fitness: marathons in miles (26.2 mi = 42.195 km). Road speed: UK/US uses mph. Air navigation: nautical miles, knots. Car purchases from the UK/USA: convert mileage (miles to km). Speed limit on Google Maps (UK): mph. GPS and sports apps: miles vs km.
Conversion table
1 mi = 1.609 km. 5 mi = 8.05 km. 10 mi = 16.09 km. 13.1 mi (half marathon) = 21.1 km. 26.2 mi (marathon) = 42.195 km. 100 mi = 160.9 km. 1 nmi = 1,852 km. 100 nmi = 185.2 km. 10 km = 6,214 mi.
FAQ
Where does a land mile come from?
The land mile comes from the Latin "mille passus" (one thousand double steps = 5,000 feet Rome). Standardization in the UK: 1593 (5,280 feet = 1 mile). Why 5,280 feet? It resulted from the standardization of furlong (201m) × 8. Nautical mile: 1 minute of arc of the meridian circle = 1852 m (established in 1929).
How to convert mph to km/h in your head?
Approximation ×1.6: 60 mph × 1.6 = 96 km/h (96.56 to be exact). Faster method: ×8/5. 50 mph × 8/5 = 80 km/h (80.47 to be exact). Or: add half + 10%: 60 mph + 30 + 6 = 96 km/h. For approximations: ×1.6 is sufficient.
How many miles are in a 5K run?
5 km = 3.107 mi. 10 km = 6,214 mi. Half marathon = 13.1 mi = 21,098 km. Marathon = 26,219 mi = 42,195 km. 100 mi (ultramarathon) = 160.93 km. In the USA, races often given in miles: 5K, 10K, Half Marathon, Marathon are unified.
What is a sea knot?
1 knot = 1 nautical mile/hour = 1,852 km/h. Used: aviation (flight speed), sailing (ship speed), meteorology (wind speed). Why a knot? Historically, a ship's speed was measured by throwing in a rope with knots and counting how many times passed in 30 seconds.
How does the US measure road distances?
USA, Liberia, Myanmar: land miles. Signs: "Speed Limit 65 mph." Counters: mph. GPS: US miles by default, km configurable. Maps and Navigation: Apple Maps, Google Maps support both units. Interesting fact: NASA uses metric (unofficially - the Mars Climate Orbiter crashed due to a unit error in 1999).
