Engine power - kilowatts (kW) vs. horsepower (HP)

When buying a car, motorcycle or analyzing the vehicle registration certificate, we inevitably come into contact with two different units determining engine power - kilowatts (kW) and horsepower (HP). Although the basic unit of power measurement in official European Union documents and technical specifications is the kilowatt (belonging to the SI system), drivers and automotive fans are still more willing to use traditional horsepower. This is due to tradition and the fact that values expressed in HP sound more impressive (e.g. 110 kW equals 150 HP). To move efficiently in the automotive world, it is worth knowing how to quickly and accurately convert these units.

Our instant kW to HP and HP to kW power converter allows you to instantly convert the engine power of any vehicle, which makes it easier to compare purchase offers and calculate insurance premiums.

History of units – where did the "horsepower" come from?

Horses have an interesting history tied to the Industrial Revolution:

  • James Watt's Steam Horse:In the 18th century, Scottish inventor James Watt perfected the steam engine. To convince mines to buy his machines, he had to compare their power to the work of traditional draft horses. He estimated that an average horse could lift a 75 kg load to a height of 1 meter in 1 second.
  • HP (Horsepower - DIN):Mainly used in Europe (DIN compliant), defined as the power needed to vertically raise a mass of 75 kg to a height of 1 meter in 1 second (1 HP ≈ 735.5 W).
  • HP (Horsepower - SAE):A unit used in Anglo-Saxon countries (USA, Great Britain), based on imperial units. It is slightly larger than a European horsepower (1 HP ≈ 1,014 HP ≈ 745.7 W).
  • Kilowatt (kW):The official SI unit of power, used for electrical appliances and internal combustion engines. It is 1000 watts (W).

Engine power conversion formulas

The conversion between kilowatts and horsepower is based on constant mathematical coefficients:

Power in HP = Power in kW · 1.35962(approximately multiply by 1.36)

Power in kW = Power in HP · 0.735498(approximately multiply by 0.74 or divide by 1.36)

The table below shows a quick cheat sheet of the most common car engine power values:

Power in kilowatts (kW) Power in horsepower (HP) Power in imperial horsepower (HP) Vehicle class / Application
44 kW 60 HP 59 HP Small city cars, older models.
66 kW 90 HP 89 HP Classic petrol and diesel engines (e.g. older 1.9 TDI).
74 kW 100 HP 99 HP Standard compact cars for everyday driving.
110 kW 150 HP 148 HP Modern, dynamic petrol and turbodiesel engines.
147 kW 200 HP 197 HP Mid-class cars with a sporty character, hot-hatch type.
221 kW 300 HP 296 HP Sports cars, premium limousines, powerful SUVs.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

How much horsepower is 1 kW?

One kilowatt (1 kW) is exactly 1.35962 horsepower (HP). In everyday calculations, a simplified conversion factor of 1.36 HP is used.

How to convert horsepower (hp) to kilowatts (kW)?

To convert horsepower to kilowatts, multiply the value in HP by the factor 0.7355 (or divide by 1.36). For example, a 100 HP engine has approximately 74 kW.

What is the difference between KM and HP?

The unit of HP (Horse Power) is used in continental Europe, while HP (Horsepower) is the imperial unit used in the US and UK. The difference is due to different base units (metric vs. imperial) - 1 HP is approximately 1,014 HP (i.e. a 300 HP engine has 304 HP).

Where is the engine power on the vehicle registration certificate?

In the Polish registration certificate, the engine power is given only in kilowatts (kW). It is located in the box marked with the symbolQ.2.

Are electric car engines also described in KM?

Electric car manufacturers provide power in horsepower (HP) for marketing purposes to facilitate comparison with combustion cars. However, nominally and technically, their power is always expressed in kilowatts (kW).
