The inch (symbol: in or ″) is an Anglo-Saxon unit of length that historically corresponded to the width of a man's thumb. The Polish name comes from the word "whole", which was formerly associated with the concept of the full measure of a finger. In 1959, an international agreement was signed under which the inch was unified and linked to the metric system. Since then, the international inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters. Despite widespread digitization and the introduction of the SI system, inches still remain the standard in determining the diagonals of screens, the dimensions of car rims and the diameters of threads and installation pipes.

How to easily convert inches to cm in memory?
The quickest method is to multiply the value in inches by 2.5. To make the result more accurate, add a small fraction to the calculated value (e.g. 10 inches is 10 × 2.5 = 25 cm, the exact result is 25.4 cm).
How to measure a TV in inches?
You need to measure the diagonal of the screen itself (without the housing frame) in centimeters and then divide this result by 2.54.
What does the inch symbol mean and how to write it?

Why isn't 1/2 inch pipe 1.27 cm outside diameter?
In hydraulics, the so-called tubular inch. The 1/2 inch measurement historically referred to the inside (lumen of the pipe) diameter, not the outside. A modern 1/2" steel pipe has an outside diameter of approximately 21 mm.
