What is the IBAN standard and how is the account number constructed?
IBAN, i.e. International Bank Account Number, is an international standard for writing bank account numbers developed by ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and ECBS (European Committee for Banking Standards). It was created to improve and accelerate the settlement of cross-border payments, especially in the European Union and the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA).
The structure of the IBAN number is strictly defined and consists of several elements. At the very beginning there are two letters indicating the country code (e.g. PL for Poland, DE for Germany, GB for Great Britain). Then there are two check digits that are used to verify the correctness of the entire number using a mathematical algorithm. The remaining part is the local bank account number (BBAN), the length and structure of which varies depending on the banking specifications of a given country. In Poland, the full IBAN number consists of twenty-eight characters (PL code and twenty-six digits).
How does the IBAN verification algorithm (Modulo 97) work?
IBAN validation is not based on a simple check of the number of characters, but uses an advanced mathematical test based on the ISO 7064 standard (Modulo 97-10). The testing process takes place in several steps. First, the country code and check digits are moved to the very end of the account number. All letters are then replaced with the corresponding numbers (where A is ten, B is eleven, up to Z is thirty-five). The resulting very long string of digits is divided by the number ninety-seven.
According to the IBAN standard specification, the remainder of this division (modulo) must be exactly one. If the result is different, it means that there is an error in the account number - it may have been a typo, omission of a digit or swapping characters. Our validator automatically performs this complex mathematical operation in a fraction of a second, eliminating the need for manual calculations and giving the user 100% confidence in the structural correctness of the account.

In turn, the BIC code (Bank Identifier Code), also called the SWIFT code, is a unique identifier of a specific banking institution in the world. For foreign transfers, both codes are most often required.
How does the Modulo 97 algorithm work in account verification?
The algorithm moves the first four IBAN characters to the end, converts the letters into digits and calculates the remainder of dividing the resulting number by 97. According to the international standard, a valid account number will always give a remainder of 1. Any other result means an error in the number structure.
Does the IBAN validator guarantee that the specified account actually exists?
The validator confirms the mathematical and structural correctness of the account number (i.e. that such a number meets all banking standards and can theoretically exist). However, the tool does not have access to private bank databases and is unable to verify whether the account is active and who it belongs to.
