Unlike many holidays with centuries-old traditions, Grandmother's Day has a relatively young history in Poland with a clear media origin:
- Initiative from 1964: The idea of creating such a holiday first appeared in the popular weekly "Kobieta i Życie" in 1964. The editors proposed to appreciate the efforts of all grandmothers in post-war Poland in this way.
- Events in Poznań (1965): The key moment was the celebrations in Poznań. On January 21, 1965, the famous actress Mieczysława Ćwiklińska performed in this city, celebrating her 85th birthday. Journalists of "Express Poznański" presented her with a cake and flowers, announcing this day as Grandma's Day. The initiative quickly gained approval from the inhabitants of Greater Poland.
- Nationwide coverage (1966): A year later, in 1966, the editorial office of "Express Wieczorny" in Warsaw officially announced January 21 as nationwide Grandmother's Day, which permanently entered this date into Polish calendars.
