Regular monitoring of blood pressure is one of the most important elements of the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, which are the main cause of health problems in the world. Our blood pressure calculator allows you to instantly assign your measurement results to official medical categories, facilitating health monitoring and informed medical consultations.
Blood pressure categories and their clinical significance
According to the guidelines of leading cardiological societies, including the American Heart Association (AHA) and the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), blood pressure values are divided into several main categories. Optimal and normal blood pressure in an adult is below 120 mm Hg for systolic pressure and below 80 mm Hg for diastolic pressure. High blood pressure (pre-hypertension) is diagnosed when the systolic blood pressure is between 120 and 129 mm Hg and the diastolic blood pressure is below 80 mm Hg. Stage 1 hypertension starts at 130 to 139 mm Hg (systolic) or 80 to 89 mm Hg (diastolic). Stage 2 hypertension is defined as values equal to or greater than 140 mm Hg systolic or 90 mm Hg diastolic. The most dangerous category is hypertensive crisis (orifice), requiring immediate medical attention when the pressure exceeds 180 mm Hg systolic or 120 mm Hg diastolic.
How to properly measure blood pressure at home?
In order for the results obtained using a home blood pressure monitor to be reliable and to be correctly interpreted by our calculator, several rules must be strictly observed. The measurement should be taken in a quiet and warm room, after at least five minutes of rest in a sitting position. Before the examination, you should not drink coffee, smoke cigarettes or engage in intense physical activity for at least thirty minutes. The arm on which the cuff is placed should be placed on a flat surface at the level of the heart, and the feet should rest flat on the floor (do not cross your legs). You should not talk or move during the measurement itself. It is advisable to take two measurements one to two minutes apart and take the average of them, which eliminates the error associated with temporary stress caused by the test itself.
Factors influencing blood pressure fluctuations
Blood pressure values are not constant and change constantly during the day under the influence of various internal and external stimuli. Natural factors include the circadian rhythm - blood pressure is usually lowest at night while sleeping, and increases in the morning after waking up. Strong emotions, stress, anxiety or excitement cause the release of adrenaline, which results in a sudden and visible increase in blood pressure. Physical exercise has a similar effect, forcing the heart to work harder. Other factors include a diet high in salt (sodium retains water in the body, increasing blood volume), drinking alcohol, smoking and taking certain medications (e.g. nasal drops or painkillers). Persistent increase in blood pressure requires medical diagnosis to exclude secondary hypertension, which is a symptom of other diseases, for example kidney or thyroid.
Frequently asked questions
What are normal blood pressure values for an adult?
Normal blood pressure in an adult is considered to be values below 120 mm Hg for systolic pressure (upper value) and below 80 mm Hg for diastolic pressure (lower value). These values may vary slightly in elderly people, but they should always be consulted with a family doctor.
What does prehypertension (high blood pressure) mean?
Prehypertension is a situation in which the systolic blood pressure is between 120 and 129 mm Hg and the diastolic blood pressure remains below 80 mm Hg. It is not yet a disease, but a clear warning signal about the need to modify your lifestyle, implement a diet and increase physical activity.
When does high blood pressure require an emergency call?
Hypertensive crisis, i.e. blood pressure above 180/120 mm Hg, requires immediate medical attention, especially when it is accompanied by symptoms such as severe headache, visual disturbances, shortness of breath, chest pain, nausea or numbness in the limbs.
Does one high measurement mean that I have hypertension?
No, a single high result is not the basis for a diagnosis of hypertension. Blood pressure may increase due to stress, fatigue or drinking coffee. The diagnosis of hypertension is made by a doctor based on a series of measurements performed at different times of the day for at least a dozen or so days or an ABPM (blood pressure Holter) test.
How to lower blood pressure naturally without medications?
Natural methods of lowering blood pressure include weight loss, regular physical activity (e.g. brisk walking, swimming), limiting salt and alcohol intake, quitting smoking, avoiding stress, and following a DASH diet rich in vegetables, fruits, low-fat dairy products and whole grains.
