The introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in May 2018 revolutionized the public availability of information in the WHOIS database. In order to protect the privacy of natural persons, domain registrars have been obliged to hide (redact) personal data of subscribers in publicly available search results. Currently, when searching for a domain registered by a private person, instead of the name and telephone number we will see a privacy annotation (e.g. "Data redacted for privacy"). Data of companies and institutions may still be partially visible, depending on the regulations of the given national registrar. There are many reasons to use a WHOIS lookup. For domain investors, it is crucial to monitor the expiration date of domains. If the owner forgets to pay the subscription, the domain goes into quarantine and then goes to the secondary market, where it can be intercepted. WHOIS also allows you to check EPP statuses (e.g. clientTransferProhibited), which is useful during the procedure of transferring a domain to another registrar. In security analysis and combating cybercrime, WHOIS data helps verify the age of a domain - newly registered domains with a short history are much more often used in phishing campaigns and online fraud.

How to interpret WHOIS search results?

WHOIS query results may seem complicated at first glance due to the large amount of technical text in text format. The key fields to pay attention to are: Registrar (the entity from which the domain was purchased), Creation Date (the date of first registration), Registry Expiry Date (the date by which the domain is paid for) and Name Servers (DNS servers pointing to the domain hosting).
