Barcode generator - technology that improves global trade

Barcodes (one-dimensional - 1D codes) are graphical representations of data using a system of black and white lines of various widths. The invention of the barcode in the mid-20th century revolutionized logistics, warehousing and retailing around the world. Thanks to automatic reading using laser scanners or cameras, the process of identifying products at the cash register or in the warehouse takes a fraction of a second, completely eliminating human errors when entering numbers manually. The most popular barcode standards in the world are the European EAN-13 and the American UPC-A.

Our free online barcode generator allows you to instantly generate codes in the most popular standards (EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, Code 128). The tool automatically calculates the check digit for the entered numeric strings, verifies their correctness and generates a professional barcode. You can download the finished file as a scalable SVG vector (ideal for printing on packaging without loss of quality) or as a PNG raster file.

Depending on the purpose of the product, the country of sale and the amount of encoded data, different types of barcodes are used. The table below presents their summary:

Code standard Number of encoded characters Main purpose Geographic scope Specific structure
EAN-13 13 digits Marking of goods in retail trade. Global (except US and Canada). Consists of the country prefix, manufacturer code, product code and check digit.
UPC-A 12 digits Consumer Product Labeling. Mainly USA and Canada. American equivalent of EAN-13; read by the same scanners globally.
EAN-8 8 digits Marking of small packages (e.g. cosmetics, chewing gum) where EAN-13 does not fit. Global. A shortened version of EAN-13 without the full-length manufacturer's code.
Code 128 Alphanumeric (letters, numbers, special characters) Logistics, courier labels (e.g. DPD, DHL), serial numbers, parcel identifiers. Global. A very dense code that allows you to encode any ASCII characters. No hard character limit.

How to read the EAN-13 code? Digit structure

Each digit in the EAN-13 code has its own precisely defined meaning in the structure managed by the international GS1 organization:

  • GS1 prefix (first 3 digits):Indicates the national GS1 organization in which the manufacturer is registered (e.g. 590 is Poland, 400–440 is Germany, 000–019 is the USA). This does not necessarily mean the physical place of production of the goods, but the country of registration of the company.
  • Manufacturer Code (next 4 to 7 digits):A unique number assigned to a specific company by the GS1 organization.
  • Product code (next 2 to 5 digits):A number assigned to a specific product by the manufacturer itself within its own pool of numbers.
  • Check digit (last digit):Used to verify that the code is read correctly by the scanner. It is calculated based on a special mathematical algorithm (the sum of the products of the remaining digits multiplied alternately by 1 and 3).

How to generate and prepare a barcode for printing?

Guide To ensure that your product's barcode can be easily read by store scanners, follow these basic printing guidelines:

  1. Use the vector format (SVG):When designing packaging or labels, always import the code in SVG format. This allows the code to be scaled freely witho
