How does the speed calculator work?
All logic is based on the basic relationship:speed = distance / time. If you know two of these values, the third can be calculated without guessing. The calculator does this automatically and additionally converts the result into the most popular units:
- Speed : m/s, km/h, mph (miles per hour).
- Distance: m, km, mi (miles).
- Time: s, min, h.
- Premium Metrics: pace min/km, knots, Mach, ft/s, speed of light percentage.
In practice, this means that regardless of whether you count a 5 km run, a car ride or a speed of 200 meters, you can enter the data in a convenient unit and you will receive the result in several formats at the same time. This reduces the risk of confusion, especially when you mix units (e.g. distance in miles, time in minutes, speed in km/h).
Operating modes: when to use which?
1) Speed mode - calculate the speed
Select this mode when you havedistance i timeand you want to know the speed. This is the most common scenario: running, cycling, walking, measuring speed on a section or analyzing data from a sports watch.

- Example: 400 m in 70 seconds → what speed in m/s and km/h?

2) "Distance" mode - calculate distance

3) Time mode - calculate time

Units and precision: why "decimals"?
The "decimals" field allows you to set the number of decimal places in the results. This is important because in sports sometimes details count (e.g. pace 4:59 vs 5:01), and in technical applications you want to avoid unnecessary noise (e.g. 123.456789 km/h does not always make sense).
- For training: 1-2 decimal places are usually sufficient.
- Science/Physics: 3-6 spots if you're comparing values.
- For simple directions: 0–1 decimal place.
Premium Metrics: Pace, Knots, Mach, and "Speed Context"
The classic units (m/s, km/h, mph) are basic, but many people need additional interpretations. Therefore, the calculator also shows:

Additionally, the calculator assigns the result to a simple "speed context" to make it easier to imagine the scale:walking pace, run/jog, sprint, highway, airlinerorsupersonic speed. This is especially useful when you count speeds in unusual units (e.g. m/s) and want to immediately understand whether the result is "small" or "large" in the everyday sense.
Most common errors and how to avoid them
- Time = 0– in speed counting mode, time cannot be zero. If you enter 0, the calculator will not calculate the result. The same applies to speed in time counting mode.
- Mixing units without control- e.g. distance in miles and speed in km/h. The calculator will convert this, but make sure you consciously choose the units in the input fields (d_unit, t_unit, v_unit).
- Too low precision- for very short distances and times (e.g. 60 m in 7.2 s) 0 decimal places will hide the differences. In such cases, set decimals to 2–4.
- Confusing mph and km/h– 60 mph is approximately 96.56 km/h. If you are using US data, check that the source is reporting mph.
Examples of use (real life)
Running training: pace min/km
You want to run 10 km in 50 minutes. In "speed" mode, enter a distance of 10 km and a time of 50 minutes. You will get speed in km/h and pace in min/km. Pace is often more intuitive in training because it is easy to control on your watch.
- If your pace is too fast, increase your training time or decrease your training distance.
- If you want a starting plan, min/km pace is the best measure to use.
Access by car: how long will the route take?
You have 240 km to travel and you assume an average speed of 80 km/h (taking into account stops and traffic). In "time" mode, enter a distance of 240 km and a speed of 80 km/h. The calculator will show the time in hours, minutes and seconds.
- Add a margin for breaks - the real average usually falls.
- Compare several scenarios: 70, 80 and 90 km/h.
Bicycle: distance at speed
You are riding recreationally at 18 km/h and you have an hour. In "distance" mode, enter 18 km/h and 1 hour. The result will show the distance in km and conversion to miles.
- In the wind and on undulating terrain, the speed decreases - calculate the 15 km/h variant.
- If you count the trainer, remember that the "km/h" from the device can be arbitrary.
Navigation: Knots (kn)
If you are interested in sailing, the "kn" (knots) metric is crucial. The calculator will automatically provide it as a premium value. This allows you to compare data from weather maps and on-board instruments without manual counting.

FAQ
What is the difference between speed (km/h) and pace (min/km)?
Speed tells you how many kilometers you cover in an hour, and pace tells you how many minutes it takes you to cover 1 kilometer. In running, the pace is usually more comfortable because it is easier to control over short distances. The calculator shows both results so you can choose what is more intuitive for you.
Why is Mach "indicative"?
Mach depends on the speed of sound, and this changes with temperature and atmospheric conditions. The calculator uses a typical value of approximately 340.3 m/s (conditions close to 15°C), so the result is very good for comparison, but in professional aviation applications specific conditions are taken into account.
What to do if the calculator does not show the result?
This most often happens when in "speed" mode the time is 0, or in "time" mode the speed is 0. Also make sure that you are entering positive numbers and have the correct units selected in the checkboxes.
Can I count very large or very small values?
Yes. The calculator converts units mathematically, so it can handle both walking speeds and "cosmic" speeds (hence the percentage of the speed of light). If you are counting extreme values, set more decimal places to make the result readable.
