How to use the ballast calculator step by step?

Using the tool is simple and requires only basic information about the planned investment. In the first step, enter the total area of ​​laying the cubes in square meters. If you only know the dimensions of the square, you can multiply them (length times width) to get this result. Then enter the planned bedding thickness in centimeters - the standard value is four centimeters. The next step is to choose the type of bedding: it can be clean sand, cement-sand bedding (in a specific proportion, e.g. one to four or one to six) or fine stone grit. The calculator automatically takes into account the bulk density of individual materials and their compressibility when compacted with a mechanical vibrator. As a result, you will receive the exact weight of materials in tons and volume in cubic meters, and in the case of cement ballast - also the number of bags of cement that should be purchased.

Types of materials used for ballast and their properties

The choice of material for bedding depends on the intended use of the surface and ground conditions. Clean washed sand or fine grit works perfectly on garden paths and terraces where there is only pedestrian traffic. Cement-sand ballast is commonly used on driveways for passenger cars and internal roads. Cement binds sand grains, which significantly increases the load-bearing capacity of the entire structure and prevents the ballast from being washed away by water leaking under the gaps between the cubes. Basalt or granite grit with a fraction of one to four millimeters is also becoming more and more popular. Grit provides excellent drainage, is not susceptible to frost damage and hinders the growth of weeds and moss in the cracks of the paving stones.
