Unix Timestamp converter - Unix time and online date conversion

In the world of information technology, databases and operating systems, representing time and date in a traditional format (e.g.June 18, 2026 11:30) can be problematic due to different time zones, recording formats and changes to summer and winter time. To standardize time recording, the so-calledUnix Timestamp(Unix timestamp). It is defined as the total number of seconds that have elapsed sinceof the Unix Epoch, that is, sinceon January 1, 1970 at 00:00:00 UTC. Our free online Unix Timestamp converter is a fast and simple tool for developers, database and system administrators. It allows you to quickly convert timestamp to a readable date (local time and UTC) and convert any date to timestamp in both directions.

All calculations are performed locally in the browser, which guarantees immediate operation without network delays.

Every programming language has built-in functions or libraries to handle system time. The table below shows the methods of getting the current timestamp in different technologies:

Language / Technology Command to get the current Timestamp Return time unit Notes
JavaScript / Node.js Math.floor(Date.now() / 1000)ornew Date().getTime() Milliseconds (requires dividing by 1000 for seconds). TheDate.now()method returns milliseconds since the Unix epoch.
PHP time()or$_SERVER['REQUEST_TIME'] Seconds. Thetime() functionreturns the current Unix time.
Python import time; int(time.time()) Seconds (as a floating point number). Requires a cast toint()to truncate the fractional part (milliseconds).
MySQL / MariaDB SELECT UNIX_TIMESTAMP(NOW()); Seconds. The database retrieves the server's system time.
Bash (Linux/Unix terminal) date +%s Seconds. Built-in system shell command.

What is the Year 2038 Problem (Y2K38)?

Unix Timestamp was traditionally written as a 32-bit signed integer. The maximum value this data type can store is $2^{31} - 1 = 2\.147\.483\.647$.

This value will be reached exactlyon January 19, 2038 at 03:14:07 UTC. One second later, the pointer will overflow and become negative ($-2\.147\.483\.648$), causing computer systems to read the date as December 13, 1901. This can lead to global failures of software, databases and embedded systems. Modern operating systems and databases solve this problem by switching to 64-bit time recording (64-bit integer), which allows for error-free time measurement for the next 292 billion years.

How to use Unix Timestamp converter?

Time conversion in our tool is done in two ways:

  1. Timestamp to date:Paste or enter the number of seconds (e.g.1776270135) into the text field and click the "Convert" button. The calculator will display the date in UTC format and in your local time (taking into account your browser's time zone).
  2. Date on Timestamp:Select the year, month, day, hour and minute in the date picker boxes and click "Generate Timestamp". The system will immediately generate the appropriate numerical value in seconds, which you can copy to the clipboard with one click.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is Unix Epoch?

The Unix epoch is the zero point in the Unix time system, corresponding to January 1, 1970, 00:00:00 UTC. Each timestamp is simply the number of seconds that have passed since that specific moment in history. Dates before 1970 are represented by negative values.

Does time zone affect the Unix Timestamp value?

No, Unix Timestamp is a universal value and independent of time zones - it always refers to UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). Regardless of whether you generate a timestamp in Warsaw, New York or Tokyo, in the same fraction of a second the numerical value will be identical all over the world.

How to distinguish timestamp in seconds from milliseconds?

This can usually be identified by the number of digits. The current timestamp in seconds (year 2026) consists of 10 digits (e.g. 1776270135). In turn, a timestamp expressed in milliseconds (used e.g. in JavaScript) has 13 digits (e.g. 1776270135000). To convert milliseconds to seconds, simply divide the value by 1000 and round down.

How are leap seconds handled in Unix Timestamp?

The traditional Unix time system ignores leap seconds introduced by scientists from time to time to synchronize clock time with the Earth's rotation. On the day a leap second is introduced, timestamp repeats or skips the last second of the day, making a day on Unix always equal to 86,400 seconds.

How to convert timestamp to date in Excel?

In Microsoft Excel, you can convert timestamp to a date using the formula:=(A1/86400)+DATA(1970;1;1), where cell A1 is the timestamp in seconds. The resulting cell should be formatted as a date and time. This formula divides seconds by the number of seconds in a day (86400) and adds the result to the starting point of the Unix Epoch.
