Convert HEX → integer
Hex digit → 4 bits. Two hex digits = 1 byte. Examples: 0xFF = 255 (8-bit unsigned). 0xFFFF = 65535 (16-bit unsigned). 0xDEADBEEF = 3735928559 (32-bit unsigned). Method: sum of digits × 16^position. D(13)×16³ + E(14)×16² + A(10)×16¹ + D(13)×16⁰.
Signed vs unsigned integers
Unsigned: 0 to 2^n-1. E.g. uint8: 0-255. Signed (with sign, two's complement): -(2^(n-1)) to 2^(n-1)-1. int8: -128 to 127. Highest bit = sign bit. 0xFF as uint8 = 255. 0xFF as int8 = -1. 0x80 as uint8 = 128. 0x80 as int8 = -128.
Endianness – byte order
Little-endian (x86/ARM): least significant first byte. Number 0x12345678 in memory: 78 56 34 12. Big-endian (network, Java): most significant first byte: 12 34 56 78. Network byte order: big-endian. ntohl() and htonl() convert between them in C.
