How to Extract Images From PDF

Open the “Extract Images From PDF” tool, choose a single PDF file, and set the output format. PNG is selected by default, and the minimum image size is 32 pixels. Click “Extract images” to start.

The tool runs locally in your browser. Your PDF is not uploaded to a server, so the document stays on your device. The scan works through the pages of the document one after another, and thumbnails of the images it finds appear in a list.

Each result shows the page number, the dimensions in pixels, and the file size in KB. The link downloads a single file. The file name includes the page number and the image number, for example image-page1-1.png or image-page2-3.jpg. You can also use the “Download all” button, which downloads the available images one after another.

Choosing PNG/JPEG Format and Minimum Size

Before you extract, pick a format: PNG or JPEG. PNG saves images without a background and without loss, so it works well when you care about transparency and exact reproduction. JPEG adds a white background and saves the image at quality 0.92, which is often convenient for photos or smaller files.

You can also set the minimum image size in pixels. The default is 32 px, and the smallest possible value is 1 px. The tool skips images whose width or height is below the threshold you set. That way you can filter out small icons, lines, and tiny elements you do not need.

  • PNG — no background, lossless.
  • JPEG — white background, quality 0.92.
  • Minimum size — 32 px by default, 1 px minimum.

If transparency matters to you, choose PNG. If you want JPEG files with a white background, choose JPEG before you start the extraction.

Deduplication and the 300-Result Limit

The tool tries not to show the same image more than once. It skips duplicates identified by name and by dimensions plus file size. That keeps the result list shorter and easier to review. Deduplication is automatic, so you do not need to check anything.

Further pages of the PDF are only scanned while fewer than 300 images have been found so far. A single page can contribute more than 300 images if that many are embedded in it. Once the limit is reached, the tool stops moving through further pages, but images from the page it is already analyzing can still make it into the results.

The 300-result limit applies to moving on to new pages. In practice, with very long documents, the list may end with results from earlier pages.

Downloading Single Images or All at Once

Results are shown as a list of thumbnails. For each image you see the page number, the dimensions in pixels, and the file size in KB. Clicking the link downloads a single file in the format you chose.

If you want to save all the images, click “Download all.” The tool then triggers the downloads one after another, every 250 ms. Your browser may ask for permission to download multiple files; accept it if you want the whole set. With a large number of files, the download can take a moment because it happens sequentially.

File names are ordered: they contain the page number and the image number on that page, and the extension depends on the format you selected. That makes it easier to match an image to its place in the document.

Limitations: Raster Images Only, No Vector Graphics, and File Recompression

The tool extracts raster images only, meaning photos, scans, and bitmaps. It does not turn vector graphics, text, paths, shapes, or charts that are not stored as raster images in the PDF into images. If a document consists mainly of vector graphics, you will not see them in the results list.

The quality of the output depends on how the images were embedded in the PDF. The tool reads what it finds in the document and then saves the image in the format you chose. PNG is saved without a background and without loss, while JPEG is saved with a white background at quality 0.92, so it may be recompressed. The resulting file can differ from the original file inside the PDF in background, transparency, or compression.

The tool does not extract images smaller than the threshold you set. It does not merge images, improve their quality, or convert the whole PDF to another format. It also does not handle layers, forms, annotations, or document editing. It does not extract text or recognize the content of the document. PDF files are supported; other formats are not accepted. Before you use the results in a publication, check that you have the right to use the images from that PDF.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I extract images from a PDF without uploading the file to a server?

Choose a single PDF file in the tool and click “Extract images.” The PDF is processed locally in your browser, so it never leaves your device. The document stays on your computer the whole time.

Can I choose the format of the extracted images?

Yes. PNG and JPEG are available. PNG is the default and saves images without a background and without loss, while JPEG adds a white background and saves the image at quality 0.92.

What does the minimum image size in pixels mean?

It is the threshold that filters out images that are too small. It is 32 px by default, and you can set it as low as 1 px. The tool will skip an image if its width or height is below that value.

Will the tool extract vector graphics from a PDF?

No. Only raster images, such as photos and bitmaps, are extracted. Vector graphics, text, shapes, and charts stored as vectors will not appear in the results list.

Why can the number of results stop at 300 images?

The tool moves on to further pages only while fewer than 300 images have been found so far. A single page can add more images, but later pages are no longer scanned once that limit is reached.

Are the extracted images identical to the files inside the PDF?

Not always. The result depends on how the images were embedded and on the format you choose. PNG is saved without a background and without loss, while JPEG uses a white background and quality 0.92, so the file may be compressed again.

The tool runs entirely locally in your browser and does not send the PDF to a server; results depend on PDF.js and the compression settings, so check that the quality and format meet your needs before you use them.
