How the Chinese name generator works and what exactly creates

After entering the name in the text box, you select a few options and click the generate button. The engine underneath divides the given name intophonetic segments, maps them to available characters, and then builds a name proposal from 2 or 3 characters. For each character you also see pinyin, which is the Latin transcription of the pronunciation. At the end, you get a short explanation of the meaning, consisting of the most frequently assigned meanings of the hanzi used.

Two things are important. First, the generator works on a simplified dictionary of syllables and characters, so the result isa language toy, not a literal translation. Secondly, the algorithm prefers signs associated with positive values, such as peace, wisdom, strength or beauty. Thanks to this, the generated name usually sounds good and has a nice meaning.

Style, length and gender feeling - adjust the character of the name

You can control the character of the result with several sliders.The length ofrefers to the number of characters of the name and is 2 or 3. In practice, shorter propositions are more classic, and longer ones allow to express more nuances of meaning.

The most important knob isstyle: neutral, nature, power, wisdom, love. These are sets of keywords that we use to filter candidate signs. The nature style will favor words such as forest, river or flower, power will emphasize signs associated with strength or victory, wisdom will choose clarity, science and thought, and love will shift the emphasis to kindness, beauty and grace. The neutral style is a safe balance.

Additionally, there isgender feeling(gender feeling): neutral, feminine, masculine. If you choose neutral, you don't impose anything. But when you set it to feminine, the neutral style will automatically soften towards love. With masculine, the neutral style will be enhanced towards power. This makes it easy to get a name with the desired character without knowing Chinese.

Chinese surnames - common, transliterated or no surname

A Chinese name usually consists of a surname and a given name. In the generator, you have three modes of working with the surname:

• Popular- you choose one of the popular Chinese surnames written in Hanzi, e.g. 李, 王, 张, 刘, 陈. The system will add them before the name and add pinyin, e.g. 李 as Lǐ, 王 as Wáng.
• Transliterate- you enter your own surname in the Latin alphabet, and the tool will map it phonetically to one character and generate the pinyin of the first part. This is a good compromise for people who want to keep the sound of their family name.
• None- you give up the surname and generate only the first name. This option can be convenient if you just want to see the style and meaning of the name without the full structure.
